ANZAC day is our memorial day here in Oz. A day where we remember our veterans.

Hundreds of thousands attended dawn memorial services this morning. It really is a remarkable day.

At Czars we have a skeleton crew until 1pm when we will rever to a BBQ. If you do not get your correspondence answered before tomorrow, you know why.

To all those Aussies who served and are currently serving this nation in Afghanistan, Iraq, Timor, Solomon Islands we give you our heartfelt thanks.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place: and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

John McCrae (1872–1918)

The Flanders Fields poem is a wonderful one for ANZAC Day, thanks El Prez.

I also like the following speech from former Turkish President and Gallipoli veteran, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives … You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us. Where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours … You mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away the tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace after having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.

AAC day or ANZAC day? :lookaround:

I remember the poem from my Catholic school grammar days. Dad was a 4th Marine Division looey(Lt.) who landed on all the major islands, last being Iwo Jima. Shot twice in same leg in almost same spot on two different landings.

Fine memories of you Aussies; may have common ancestors as we are Americans of Irish descent.

Thank you for being true friends through thick and thin.
