Guest robusto101 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I've noticed this stick has come up a lot in the Best Cigars of 2011 thread. I watched a review by Rob and the gang and while they enjoyed it, the consensus seemed to be that it needs five or so years to be great. If I pick up a box can I begin enjoying these in a years time? Seems like others have (according to the results of the other thread) but just curious about deeper opinions. I'd still like to pick up a box as it seems they have great potential but also want to know what to expect in the short term. Thanks.
Van55 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I don't think it's a complete waste to smoke them with only a year's time on them. They do improve a lot with age, though.
TankerT Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Considering that the HDM Des Dieux needs several years of age to exhibit its true potential, I found it very surprising that it came up that often in the top 2010/2011 top cigars (?). Ditto. I didn't buy a box because I'm not that patient. So... either we're doing a lot of flip-flopping on this stick... or... very different people have different view on these.
khomeinist Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 These need around 8 years of age to reach the stage of mature complexity. That is the case for many of the best Habanos. Buy now. Forget about them. Thank me later. And I agree with Clint. The late 90s De Dieux are amazing right now.
cottierm Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 IMO they need at least 2 and better 3 years of age. After that they start to be great! Guest robusto101 Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 Thanks for the quick replies. Hovy and JThomas, I share your sentiments. Precisely why I created this thread. Well, I hate spending money on cigars I won't touch for several years but they seem to be very reasonably priced and would love to have one box I look forward to on years to come.
headstand Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 A perspective borrowed from the wine industry: a barrel tasting of an as yet immature Bordeaux might inspire a very high score. The taster is seeing the final result through the lense of experience. That could be what your seeing in the enthusiasm for the Des Dieux.
khomeinist Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Or it could be a psychological response 'what is supposed to be good.' The brain is more complex than we know.
CanuckSARTech Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 LOL. Aged ones in the LFTH from tonight!
KWG116 Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 I hope this helps. I traded for a 10pack of 08s about two years ago and forgot about them. About a year ago I tried and a few and they were ok. Then I saw Robs reviews a few month later and tried another. It was fantastic, following week tried another. Again fantastic. I smoked five of them and decided to order a box with the intention of laying them down for the five years. Got the box and they were very dark and oily. Nothing like the 08s that had a light tan wrapper. These are 2010 and smoked great. The newer ones seem to be blended a little stronger then the 08s so I can not wait to see what five years will do. But after enjoying 08 and 10's i really splurged and got a cab of the 03s. These have a finesse to them. They are a whole other class of cigar. They are so good I will probably order another cab. So I would suggest buying a box of any vintage. They are fantastic cigars.
Ken Gargett Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 had a 2000 last night. loved it. the vast majority of the ones i have smoked have been aged. my very strong impression is that while there may be some quality to a young one, not to age these is tobaccoicde. seriously, they really benefit from as much time as you can give them. i really don't think i've ever seen one that i thought might be past its best.
Guest robusto101 Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Wow, now I'm getting excited about ordering some. Might have to wait till next month as my budget might be nearing it's limit for the month. Although I'm sure I can make an exception Thanks everyone for the replies. If there are others, keep em' coming!

Although I'm sure I can make an exception Thanks everyone for the replies. If there are others, keep em' coming! Hi there my two cents are currently in the process. I'm smoking one right now that has only been in the humidor for 2 months or so. I bought this one as a single from czar. I'm 1.5 inches in and it's amazing at the moment. Smooth, and now a change in the flavor and it's delivery at around 2 inches or the second thirds opening. Nice medium body favors of cream, touches of vanilla bean, smooth cedar wood, a little salt on the lips which is glorious a subtle sweetness on the cream, mild black pepper spice and taste on the Palate and more so through the nose. A dumb way to describe it but the truth would be taking a piece of aromatic cedar and dipping it into cream with a touch of sugar and vanilla. I'm not sure if a home here has tried biting into to cedar lol but a while back my dad and I were building a cedar fence and I jus shaved a thin piece off and sort of chewed on it because I love the smell. The wood gives a bit of salt , and pepper spice, that's and hence I used it as an analogy here. That what's the cigar tastes like and it's great. the vanilla aspect is just like chewing a piece of vanilla bean, where it leaves a very distinct taste and oily feel on e palate. I'm a chef as well and luckily I've been blessed with a great palate. Anyways. Halfway point now and it's picking up in flavor intensity. Since light up its been perfect burn, draw and copious smoke. Thick rich smoke almost chewy but not quite. Im dieing to age a box now. So in my opinion I'm going to buy a pe box to smoke now and an hq or psp to age for 7 years min. Ciao.
Guest robusto101 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Great review, Soklis . It would be interesting to know the box code your single came from but these guys are next on my list.
cigaraholic Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 If you pick up a box now you can enjoy one the day they come and hopefully you will. Will they improve with age, probably but no one can say for sure. Don't put cigars on a pedestal waiting for that magic moment, it may never come or you may miss it. Hate to think of you waiting five years unless you have a five year supply.
TWalker Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I just got a box of these a couple of days ago. I have high hopes for them in the future but I still plan to sample one soon.
Guest robusto101 Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Cigaraholic, I agree. I do like to enjoy cigars in the present and I would never be hands off for that long if all I had was one box. I don't smoke all that often to begin with so by virtue of my habit, I would undoubtedly smoke some cigars now and some in a few years, all from the same box. But that's why I'm trying to buy a box a month to build up a stash that I can enjoy through the years. But I will say this: of all the boxes I've purchased, I've always tried smoke one within the first two or so weeks of receiving them.
