I have a couple of boxes of RJ Hermoso #2. I set one out to have this weekend after it came up in discussion on another site. I took notice of the second insert that these boxes contain stating, "The wrapper used for rolling this Habano has been specially selected from the top of the plant and aged during two years." I have two questions:

  1. Is this type of "specially selected" tobacco considered Medio Tempo?
  2. What other vitolas have this inserted statement?

AFAIK the Medio Tempo leaf is a small leaf, way too small to be used as a wrapper on a big cigar.

Yes the Limited Editions do come with an extra insert. I'm looking at my 2010 Partagas LE and 2009 H Up. And there is an insert that says pretty much the same thing. Except with a more updated look. Unfortunately, I can't post a photo because I'm on my iPad. But, I will tomorrow.

It also does specifically say that the filler-binder and wrapper were made with leaves aged no less than two years. However, doesn't mean they are MT for sure.

Are those any good??? All my LE boxes have some insert of such kind.

Right. To clarify, I have this insert as well, just not this exact one.

Gotcha. The insert is from 2004. So, I'm sure they update them as time goes on. Like the bands and seals.

I want to know if any other vitola mentions anything about specially selected tobacco from the top of the plant. These Hermoso No.2's are the top five cigars of my collection. I would really love to compare another cigar that states that specific fact.

It has been specified for ALL the Limited Editions since 2003, on HSA web site. In 2006 or 2007, info about the age of the binder and filler leaves appeared on the insert.

(from HSA website archives)

2001: a very careful selection of a two years aged wrapper, thus giving it a more pronounced colour than the usual wrappers of Habanos.

2003: The careful selection of a two-year aged wrapper from the upper level of the plant grants it a darker color and turns this product into something unique.

2007: The careful selection of a two-year aged wrapper from the upper level of the plant grants it a darker color and turns this product into something unique. Binder and filler leaves used for the making of the Limited Editions cigars have been aged for two years…

2011 (Cohiba 1996): The dark wrapper dressing these Habanos coming from the top leaves of the Tapado – shade grown black Cuban tobacco plant- is another characteristic that identifies them.

Again, it has nothing to do with medio tiempo.

I don't have access to my empty pre-2007 EL boxes now, and I don't remember which boxes had an insert similar to that of the Hermoso2…
