Some of you know I am a bit of a foodie, and it is kind of common knowledge (and a big fad) to pair salt up with things out of the norm, due to the enhancements the salt causes on your palate paired with certain "friendly" items...ie. Chocolate, Especially Dark Chocolate, Caramel, ect.. Now for years when I make a pot of coffee, I always sprinkle in some table salt on top of the grounds before brewing, it takes out the bitterness and enhances the taste, my grandfather taught me that. But to me one of the greatest things salt does is change and exaggerates the flavor of dark chocolate to a blissful level. I got to thinking, I wonder how this could apply to cigars? I am always describing flavors in my cigars with sweet notes, like milk coffee, Chocolate, honey, caramel, ect....So I said, it would make since if those are the flavor profiles on my palate then salt might have the same effect.

So here is my story

I have been loving coffee with my cigars more and more lately, and especially as it get cooler here in Texas. During the summer when you wake up and it's already 100F, coffee is usually the last thing you want. I loathe Starbucks, but I was at one the other day with my wife on our way home from shopping, and so I went in and decided coffee sounded good, I had already planned on lighting up a nice cigar when I got home. I noticed they had some new (i only noticed because they were marked as new) items on the menu. A whole line of salted caramel flavors. I love salted caramel, so I ordered a salted caramel mocha coffee. Took it home and lit up a Trinidad T, It was like magic!!! Now the salt in the salted caramel does many magical things to your taste buds for many foods, most well know is the pairing with dark chocolate. The salt exaggerates the chocolate taste like a pure choco explosion. Well, that's also what it did to the tobacco. The salty notes in the coffee complimented the tobacco so well, I had never tasted such a great pure taste from a cigar in my life, I have never tasted a pairing so good with a cigar before in my life!!!!! It was almost a pairing beyond description.....It's worth a shot, I highly recommend trying it. You won't be sorry.

Interesting sprinkling salt on the grounds before brewing. I'll give that a try.

I think I'll be giving it a whirl too! And I like the sound of the salted caramel mocha too.I'm a bit of a Starbucks devotee I must admit (love the mocha frapp) so I'll keep an eye out to see if they introduce it over here.

Hi Brazoeagle

I won't go as far as putting salt in my expresso even though I find the experience interesting

but I enjoy my pure arabica too much the way it is. :coffee:

However, I do like to eat bits of dark chocolate 90% cacao while smoking a cigar,

It's divine !!!

As for salt with a cigar, Yes,I also enjoy that sometimes but with some

Fralinger's Original Salt Water taffy from Atlantic City that my childhood friend sends me

from New Jersey, It's a nice compliment with my cigar.

You might enjoy smoking a Sancho Panza Belicoso. This cigar has a saltiness to it's flavor. As for salt in coffee or chocolate, not for me.

In the coffee from S/bucks it was just a salted Caramel flavor, when brewing I just sprinkle a very small amount on top of the grounds in the basket before brewing, letting it just drip over it. It really does take some bitterness out and seem more well rounded on your palate. You should try it once.

I like to have a few salted cashews while I enjoy a cigar. A nice thin slice of prosciutto before hand is really good also.

The Cold Stone Creamery near my house has salted caramel ice cream that they make fresh daily. My wife says that I am addicted to it, I think she is right. It is hands down the best ice cream I have ever had. And I am normally not a caramel fan, but it is something about having the salt in it....

My new project will be making a cigar with a prosciutto wrapper!!! It will change the game entirely.
