Lastroll Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Had a slow but productive night. There were way too many boats and way too many morons but it was still fun as usual. The one the left went 4lbs and the one on the right went about 3.

aes8 Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Nice, my uncle used to dive out of Seal Beach during the season. Enjoy!
Scarhead Posted October 3, 2011 Posted October 3, 2011 Wow, I had no idea. Question: Does one need a permit for this or is it a free for all? I may be wrong, but I believe on the east coast of the U.S. a permit or license is required. At least that was what I learned from a Seinfeld episode.

You need a permit to wipe and flush.

You need a Ca License and an ocean enhancement tax - AND (as of a couple years ago) a "CA Spiny Lobster Report Card". Total it up and you're in at about $50... Add the boat, gas, bait, glowsticks and nets and you have another expencive hobby. It's a PIA but there's nothing like setting your nets, dropping anchor, lighting your favorite cigar, toasting your friends with a single malt Scotch and watching the sun go down on the great CA Pacific ocean. We allways toss a couple lines over while the nets soak and last night I caught a real nice Halibut and a couple sand bass. That's how we start the trip. After that wonderful, peaceful hour (or two if you start early), It's a fiasco. LOL
Scarhead Posted October 4, 2011 Posted October 4, 2011 It sounds like an awesome time. The money involved doesn't sound that bad either. Especially if you split it amongst your mates. In regard to the lobsters themselves, how do they compare with say a lobster from the eastern part of the States? I prefer cold water lobster.

I personally don't care for Clawed Lobsters (cold water) as much but others swear by them. Spiny lobsters are hands down my favorite food so I'm a bit bias. They taste about the same as the Australian / New Zealand bugs.
Miami101 Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 God those look good !! I hear you on the cost. Last year down in Florida we had a crazy lobster season. This year it was bad not sure why? Maybe the Cubans.....blame the Cubans! Let see might go out again to see how it going before they close the season. I posted my Lobsters, and yes I'm Cuban so I can make fun of myself. Miami101

mk05 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Those are some big suckers there! I remember a summer back I went to Eastham in Cape Cod, this little shanty of a store had a 12 pounder. The guy who worked there told me the next day that they had to use a saw to crack the claw open!
