Now that we are in vacation time I had to start this topic. I recently came back from a vacation that included someone getting food poisoning and waiting in a hospital for 3 hours, a power outagae at the hotel for 13 hours due to an accident and wicked thunderstorms. All this fun at no extra cost!

What were some of your memorable vacations?

Last family vacay was with inlaws. We went to beach in west Florida. Men caught fish while women laid out on beach. Cooked fresh fish each night. It was great. Last one before that was with in laws in Vegas. I have great inlaws.

if my vacations include my in-laws, i'd rather be kicked in the twig and berries by Georges st-pierre...if my vacations is just me the wife and son, then its fun! just keep the in-laws away.

Wow. So many. But amongst my favourites are going to Italy on my own in August 2006. My wife and I were going to go but her sciatica made it difficult for her to travel. She told me to go anyway. So I spent 10 days getting to know my uncle and going all over the place. My uncle is my father's older brother and they're almost identical. My father passed away 25 years ago so it was great to spend time with my uncle and hear about my father's exploits back in the day. I found out a lot more about him and in general his side of the family, whom for the most part, stayed in Italy: with a few execptions that went to NYC and Pittsburgh. I took about 1200 photos and shot 20hours of video on that trip. I've spent another week with him since, last summer but this time the wife was able to come along.

I enjoy family vacations a lot, especially when it is just the wife and kids. There are so few periods of time where we all get to spend consecutive days together where we aren't splitting up for running errands, going to a game, practice, lessons, party etc. It's great to just hang out an enjoy each others company and really observe and spend quality time with my kids. What is great is taking them to see new things, or explore places they've never been whether it is Niagara Falls, the Grand Canyon, Giant Redwood trees, geysers in Yellowstone, or simply exploring a city, teaching my son to surf...all memories to be cherished. I also think a good part of what your relationship with your kids will be like when they are teenagers or even adults spring from the foundation you build with them as kids, and family vacations go a long way toward building that foundation as well as their relationships with cousins, uncles, grandparents, etc.
