I'm off travelling around mexico next year and am looking for advice on how i can keep my cigars in good nick for four months with little maintenance.

The girlfriend offered but....well i don't to explain any further and besides she's already warned me that 'any messin around and they go down the toilet' and she will do it!

I was thinking of wrapping them up well and putting them in the freezer - sort of suspended animation. I know they wont age but they can do that when i get back.

All suggestions apart from looking after them for me would be greatly appreciated.

Depending on how large your collection is you may be able to find a local cigar shop that will either rent you, if available, some humidor space or for a small fee hold and take care of your humidor.

Boveda humidification packs by humidipak would probably work well. They are supposed to last around three months, but they will normally last even longer.

Something you may also want to think about is air. Four months would be a LONG time to not have the humidors opened to circulate some fresh air.

Keith,

Please do NOT wrap them and place them in the Freezer! That would be the VERY WORST thing you could ever do to them! Rob makes an excellent suggestion with the Cigar Caddy. I own 2 of them and they are Great! I always travel with both of them a 5 count and a 32 count. BTW, if you remove the foam inserts, I have been able to place around 75 sticks inside the 32 count Cigar Caddy. No, they were not all DCs and Churchills, but I smoke a variety of sizes and shapes with my voracious Habanos appetite.

Is this question for your travels? Or is this for the storage while you are gone?

You never mentioned how many you are trying to store.

I have three of those cigar caddies and they are great. You only need to add a couple of drops of distilled water ever week or so because they are so airtight. I need to get one of those larger briefcase style sizes to hold at least 30+ cigars.

Maybe you could use a coolerdor and have you girlfriend drop in some water every three weeks?

thanks for the replys boys!

I really like the look of the cigar caddys that Rob's suggested but because i'm going backpacking i won't have the room to take my cigars (save a few for special times) with me.

I have managed to runs my stock down to around 100 (hence why i haven't bought any for ages Rob) so i think i'll try the boveda humidification packs that Colt suggested.

Check out the humidity beads from David at http://heartfeltindustries.com/Beads.htm

I have been using them for years are regulate perfectly at 65% or 70%. I also use them to stabilize the top shelves in my cabinet humidor.

Also, you can get the tubes for your Cigar Caddy!

Well worth the dough, IMHO.

keith, the quantity being 100 will easily fit in a wine carton sized box so head off to one of those professional wine storage units and expalin and ask to store that box for the period. for four months, should be something like $10 to $20 absolute max i imagine. small price for really good conditions (usually temp about 15C and humidity about 65 to 70%) and security. i keep all the ones i have planned for long term storage in such a place.

I use the 65% beads from Heartfelt Industries. They are excellent. Cheap and reliable. Plus the customer service is exemplary.

I'd like to buy a Cigar Caddy, but damn those shipping prices to Finland. It would triple the total price!

I have 5, 10, and 24 count cigar caddies. They are great for travel. But one thing I personally don't do with these is use any kind of humidification. As they are airtight, they will take on the humidity of the cigars placed inside. Adding humidity will leave you with very over humidified cigars.

For $45 USD or thereabouts, purchase online a cigar caddy or Armored Humidor System. Once you own one you will wonder what you did before hand.
