Generalgman Posted June 21, 2011 Posted June 21, 2011 Hi folks Just wanted to introduce myself as like others have been lurking behind the scenes of FOH for a little while absorbing the great vibe and excellent advice on offer. Im an Aussie from Perth but have been living in London now for the past 6 years. Im 34 and had my first cigar only about a year ago when I dropped in on my younger brother (and cigar lover) who lives in Beijing We ended up at a "cigar dinner" organised by a bunch of Chinese and Expats... had a brilliant time and met a couple of HSA guys with goodies to sample - needless to say I now have a new hobby! The FOH forum reviews have really helped me sample and select and while I am still experimenting with samplers, I have started to invest in a few cabs. Im looking forward to summer and getting more quality time outdoors to enjoy some larger vitolas! The most difficult factor for me is securing a quality yet "humble" environment to really enjoy good cigar moments - being in London, the weather is an issue which together with the smoking ban does not leave a lot of options... a simple deck with good mates is hard to find when all London has to offer is fancy hotels with expensive cigars and stiff English "jacket and tie" dress codes! London is begging for a "down-to-earth" BYO cigar smoking establishment... (if you know of one I've missed, please do let me know - otherwise I think I have just decided what I should do when the ruin that is the UK economy makes me redundant!). Thanks guys.
theholmesmob Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Welcome, spent some time in the UK myself a fews back and have the wife to prove it! As you know, this is a great place for all things cigar related! Your new hobby might soon turn to obsession! Enjoy
Generalgman Posted June 22, 2011 Author Posted June 22, 2011 Welcome to the FOH forum. Thanks Trevor... had to mentioned your brilliant site has not gone unnoticed... really good stuff!
peanutpete Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 welcome to the forum, try no.10 manchester street W1, you can bring your own cigars, there is a minimum spend but i do not think it is to strictly enforced during the day at night may be a different matter and harder to get a table, jj fox on st james street and has a up stairs room were you can "sample" a cigar but you must buy from them, no dress code
Generalgman Posted June 22, 2011 Author Posted June 22, 2011 welcome to the forum, try no.10 manchester street W1, you can bring your own cigars, there is a minimum spend but i do not think it is to strictly enforced during the day at night may be a different matter and harder to get a table, jj fox on st james street and has a up stairs room were you can "sample" a cigar but you must buy from them, no dress code Thanks mate... will definitely have to check these.. JJ's is of course seminal but Manchester St is new to me... Im still convinced I have an excuse for early retirement and London needs more chilled out cigar friendly establishments... nothing flash, Im thinking Ken's deck, with maybe a few less cobwebs Thanks all for the welcome and see youse around on the forum.
riazp Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Welcome to FoH, these guys will help you out with any questions you have, a truly brilliant forum
mazolaman Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Hi General. Yep,you're right,London needs a more down to earth cigar place. Most are in the exclusive end of things, and therefore expensive. Previous to the smoking ban,La Floridita in Soho was a great place to have smoke and a drink. It still has a good humidor, but the restaraunt is dead. Go for it,bust the exclusivity bubble! Kevin.
thechenman Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Welcome to FoH...I always say that if you see a gap and have the wherewithall for fill that empty niche...go for it. I'm sure many a cigar chomping Londoner would praise you for it.
First Lady Posted July 4, 2011 Posted July 4, 2011 Thanks mate... will definitely have to check these.. To achieve Ken's deck you will need a stolen Australia Post mail cart (might be able to help you there) a dead possum or MIA one sorry might have to come up with an alternative and you will definately need a carpet snake (maybe change that to an exotic Bird (on Rob's wishlist ) I am sure you will have an influx of Aussies who will turn up and feel at home Welcome aboard Lisa
