Watched this the other night, having not seen it for years.

Ironic on so many levels.

The fashions are bloody awful.

Synth music abounds.

The mobile phones the size of car batteries.

Beach side apartments, with awful art,and seemingly constant saxophones playing.

The acting is also pretty terrible,or maybe it was purposely clunky? Was Oliver Stone making some kind of point?Maybe not.

Only Michael Douglas puts in a good acting performance,as the infamous Gordon Geko.

Most other performances are like a lump of mahogany.

I struggle to know whether Oliver Stone was very clever,or a bad film maker.

The general film making is so bad,is it all a metaphor the the ghastly 1980s,or is it just bad?

The film does reflect the dreadful decade that was the 1980s,and shows us how the karma we are reaping now began, the attitudes prevailed that"greed is good".

One of the basic plotlines of the film is that Charlie Sheens' father (played by his real father Martin)is part of a small airline, that becomes a plaything for the trader Gekko, who makes a killing on it,then decides to sell it,essentially sinking the company and it's workers.

Charlie pulls a fast one on Gekko, and saves the company, via a bit of insider trading.

Essentially sacrificing himself to save his fathers firm.

This is the difference between the reality and this film,in reality, nobody did this, most just kept their nose in the trough.

So,this was redemptive happy ending, that didn't really reflect the reality of the 1980s.

This is a good film to watch,in spite of the awful acting.

Interesting to see Michael Douglas on top of his game,

Charlie Sheen as a fresh faced young man, still on the rails,

dreadful 1980s fashions ,music,tastes,attitudes.

A telling ode to the 1980s.

I "V+" this on my cable box for old times sake. haven't watched it yet.

I remember enjoying the film the first time round.

I must say I enjoyed this movie also when it was first out and it was still the 80's, even watching re-runs in the 90's. To watch this now, I just can't bring myself to it and it "is" mainly because of the 'Fashion, hair and music' of that era. :) You're right about the Sax in the background, many a movie in that era had it, it must have been the 'in thing'.

If they re-release movies with 'corny, tacky' music in the back ground, perhaps they should cut it out altogether? B)

Has anyone watched the new Wall Street as I haven't had the time to and if so, any good?

Lastly, Michael Douglas is a legend. :D I love all his movies, so many great ones but one of my absolute favorites is Black rain which also stars Andy Garcia. The entire setting is pretty dark, heavy rain, crowded streets being in japan, it's an all time classic.

Yeah,Black Rain is a good film.

Another good Douglas film is The Game,IMO,one of his best.

As an aside to this,Martin Sheen was on Desert Island Discs yesterday.

I have to say, what a good man he seems, straight, honest,a man of principle.

worth remembering as we take the piss out of his boy.

Heres a link, but not sure if the rest of the world can get this,I hope you can,as it is interesting to hear an interesting life.desert island discs

I love this movie Maz. It's interesting to see how powerful these individual players where in the 80's, without the slightest of technology we have today.
