michael69 Posted April 2, 2011 Author Posted April 2, 2011 Worth getting boxes for smoking now? can get P2's Oct 06.... would these be preferable to 2010? lots of 2010 D4's about as well; anyone smoking these now?
headstand Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Asked Lisa about the PSD4 a few weeks back and she said they were kind of sketchy - might have a new batch now though?
Dbone Posted April 2, 2011 Posted April 2, 2011 Have had a couple from an HQ box of D4, March 2010, friggin awesome. I got a box of HQ P2's last Sept and they're top notch, Christmas cake spice. Really haven't seen them in HQ/PSP since then, they may be off their game. If Rob picks 'em, can be pretty sure they're good.
zmancbr Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I have had the pleasure of smoking some 05,06,07,09 and 2010 PSD4s lately. I would say the 06s are my favorite and are quite nice. The 05s and 07s are next, and the 09s are after that but not by much. In all reality if you have to smoke the 09s now you won't be sorry. But if you can wait a bit you will be rewarded. I have a box of 2010s in but haven't opened them yet. Might have to crack them and see how they are. This thread makes me curious.

You really need to get the box code thing out of your head Great boxes, average boxes and poor boxes come from all years, all codes. Some standout codes have a higher proportion of Good to great cigars but I have yet to see in 15 years a mastercase of a code that did not have dogs amongst it.

I know that, but it's a very general thing I'm thinking of i.e. it's generally considered that 2008 was a good year for cubans all round..... I'm really simply after opinions; I'm not fixated on codes by any means (hell, most of the time, I don't even know the production date let alone boxcode of what I'm smoking!) I nearly always hand-select my cigars here in London (and will be doing so next week in Geneva), but if I'm ordering "blind" from somewhere and there's a choice... then I seek advice and experiences of others, particularly since it's not always possible for the retailer to do what you do Rob (which is a brilliant thing by the way!) and apply the truly personal touch; I intend to fully make use of this as often as I can, but fact of the matter is, my most recent online purchases were for cigars that aren't available at Czar at the moment (boxes of Monte Sublimes, RA Phoenicios, VR Maestros for instance; way too expensive for boxes in London too!) By the way, can us northern-hemisphere types get a heads-up on a possible LFTH session that's timed in our favour? would be great!

When buying blind go for codes first 4 months and last 4 months of the year. By the way, can us northern-hemisphere types get a heads-up on a possible LFTH session that's timed in our favour? would be great! I promise to do so this week. One day approx 5am our time (8pm London Time).
Holysmokes Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 I just smoked a D4 tonight (15 minutes ago) from a Nov 2010 box I purchased about 1 month ago. I decided to crack the box open tonight to "test" my recent purchase. Considering how young they were, I would say I enjoyed the first 2/3 and the last third was a bit bitter in taste. All in all, I would give it a 85/86. That being said, I am sure in another 6 months to a year they will be a solid 88/89. Hope this helps.

Your point is well taken and we all know that there isn't a magic box code where every box in the mastercase is a classic (and the inverse is also true) but when you have a significantly higher proportion of really good to great cigars within a certain box code, isn't that exactly why we should be paying attention to box codes? Just off the top of my head I can think of a few box codes that resonate throught the threads as producing good quality cigars. RSE/MAR03 UPM/NOV08 TEB/OCT08 MEL/SEP08 EROAGU09
BonVivant Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 SP No.2s from 2005 are delicious, as of late - well worth the wait.
shrink Posted April 3, 2011 Posted April 3, 2011 SP No.2s from 2005 are delicious, as of late - well worth the wait. I can confirm this. Enjoying another box of ENE05's!

I'm now always mindful of your advice now about the rainy season months.... I'd never considered this before, it's a great tip. I'm compiling a list of things I'd like to ask you to select for me (898's, Lusis, D4's, P2's, CoRo's, Siglos.........) I can think of no better way of buying the regulars (except paying 2 to 3 times more in London!)
