headstand Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Ahh, collecting. It's a bug, a disease... I love collecting wine because each bottle has a story to tell, and when you share that bottle with family and friends, you create yet more stories. But every cellar has its share of dark and tragic tales - that lovely Monastrell that withered wrinkled sour because of neglect... Anyway, as a new cigar enthusiast and budding collector, I think it would be fun to hear your cigar collecting stories: successes, tragedies, and the pop-psych rationalizing that drove your decisions. melies Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Well i can't say there been any disasters yet, except those horrible Davidoff Gran cru 4 that I bought in Vegas (expensive and I've had better Jose L. Piedras) But if we are talking wine, I saved a bottle of chateau laffitte 1980 for my fathers birthday that was terrible Nice to see more wine lovers in here
aes8 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 You are entering into the hobby/industry at a point when there are mass discontinuations of very high quality, regular production cigars that will be very sought after in years to come, and not to mention, never available again on the primary market. The collector market is a completely different story, but can be a whole other thread. Replacing these discontinuations are much higher priced and mass marketed "special editions" cigars. Some good, mostly (imo) not so good issues. However with that being said there are enough "home runs" of the "special editions" you need to stay engaged in order that something special does not pass you by and you have to chase it down later. The bottom line, as I see and feel it, is the newbe is getting his/her wallet squezzed at both ends. You are trying to play catchup so you are not left in the cold but also making sure don't miss out on anything. One reason this site is so great is Rob will always give you an honest heads up with what is good and not so good along with current industry/market trends.
Colt45 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 To be honest, I don't look at it from the collecting / collector's standpoint - I enjoy a good cigar. As with wine, I've learned not to get caught up in the "must have" - something else will always come along
cigcars Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 *I guess I can say I'm a "collector" of the product of this hobby due to the thrill and the chase of obtaining, despite potential consequences, an item greatly treasured, if not downright "coveted", I hate to say. And when obtaining them is based on chance and good resources, especially in getting the true product and not some knock-off, to me, you really can't end up with enough. Does this make sense?
Firewiz25 Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I used to chase all the HTF cigars and some of them turned out not to be all that great. On the other hand collecting cigars in boxes or at least pairs can be awesome. My success story - I picked up a few Trinidad Fundy's from 98 and enjoyed them with my dad and 2 close friends during the holiday season last year. Everyone enjoyed the cigar and seeing the look on their face made my collecting cigars worth it. Collecting cigars IMO is all about enjoying them with others.

Shame really about the discontinuations - already I find myself chasing cigars as you say. Tradition plays a big part in the CC mystique. Hope the industry does not blow it.

It's like hunting without the bloodshed. Mind, I like collecting consumable products precisely because I intend to consume them.
headstand Posted March 31, 2011 Author Posted March 31, 2011 Ouch, that Lafite had to hurt. My deepest sympathies.
melies Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 Ouch, that Lafite had to hurt. My deepest sympathies. It was really sad, specially because it was my mom's 70 birthday luckily we hat some 98 La mission Haut Brion to save the day
kevinfj Posted April 1, 2011 Posted April 1, 2011 See my recent thread about the over-humidified cigars. Disaster. FJ
