El Presidente Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 http://www.havanatimes.org/?p=38629 HAVANA TIMES, Feb. 26 — The XIII Habano Cigar Festival, the annual event that brings to Cuba cigar enthusiasts from around the globe, came to a close late Friday with an auction of custom made humidors and top grade cigars that brought in US $1.1 million. During the weeklong event attracted a thousand participants from 70 countries including many buyers who market Cuba’s famous cigars. Seven humidors packed with H. Upmann, Hoyo de Monterrey, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Vegas Robaina, Partagás and Cohiba cigars went to the highest bidder. The top earner was the Cohiba humidor with José María Palacios of Spain forking out a whopping $618,000. The bidding actually took place in Euros and the organizers noted that as in the past the full proceeds go to help finance the Cuban Public Health system.
betadawg Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 The top earner was the Cohiba humidor with José María Palacios of Spain forking out a whopping $618,000. Damn, I almost had it! I knew I shouldn't have given my wife that 20 to go shopping.
adic88 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 1.1 mil for 7 humidors. Sounds just about right. Damn nice cigars all of them.
josie67 Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 The bidding was fast and furious, and the humidors were all stunning. I couldn't believe how large those things were. They were between 5-8 feet tall, and the workmanship was top notch. My favorite was the Montecristo humidor with 5 full size swords sticking out of it. What an insane gala event too. I had cigars earlier in the week with Carlos Robaina, Alejandro's son, and when I saw him at the gala event, he gave me a big hug.....the Cuban people are just very friendly.
FireDigger Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 I just read from James Suckling's blog that one of the humidors didn't reach the reserve price for the first time in the history of the Festival. I wonder if it still sold or not?
josie67 Posted March 3, 2011 Posted March 3, 2011 You are correct. The Robaina humidor stalled at 40K€ so it failed to hit the reserve. I did not hear of it selling afterwards, but hell, after 7 drinks, 4 cigars, and a half bottle of Edmundo Dante 15 year old rum that somehow appeared on the table, I'm not 100% sure. I do know for a fact though that it indeed stalled at 40K€.
