stunod Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 After receiving cigars in the mail, I hear from everyone to let the cigars rest for a while. Please someone explain why. Does it really matter if I wait a minute or a week.

Think of what they go through to get to you - how would you feel after a few days of planes, trains, and automobiles That said, they're yours, smoke them as you wish.

When you have flown in an airplane for 4 or more hours how do you feel?
coneatty Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Well, after flying around for a few hours, I certainly know how I would feel...but I have no idea how I would taste. (sorry, I couldn't resist)
CigarmanTim Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I swear by smoking them rott for 3 to 10 days. I smoke them until they change....and then I give them a month or two
tsolomon Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I like to rest them for a month to 6 weeks as I think they just smoke better. The main reason I always heard was that cigars are often stored at a higher humidity by the retailer then you would keep them at home. It takes awhile for the cigars acclimate to the conditions you have in your humidor.

CanuckSARTech Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Same idea as others have said. I myself, right off the truck (OTT, as others have put), within the first week of their delivery to your door. Otherwise, wait at least a month (30 days minimum) from their delivery. IE, let them sit in your humidor to acclimatize to your conditions within those initial 30 days. In the opinion of many, that period outside of the initial week, until 30 days, is sort of a "no go zone". They have a tendency to taste either bitter or bland if you smoke them within this timeline. But, as Colt stated, they're yours, so feel free to do as you wish, and even if you want, go ahead to try them during this timeline, to experience first hand what many of us have found out. Nothing wrong with it.
bigfunkyg Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I have found that often cigars smoke very well right off the truck (OTT). However once the cigars have been in my humidor for a week then generally they need at least 20 - 30 days before the have settled and smoke well again.
smpf67 Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I would always let them sleep for 30 days from the delivery date. They will smoke so much smoother, no bitterness. Enjoy!

cigcars Posted February 13, 2011 Posted February 13, 2011 *If I get a sampler pack of 3 or 5, I'll usually immediately smoke one, then let the rest sit for some time. I've gotten the Czar and Tampa customs samplers, smoked one of each as soon as they arrived, and the rest are just setting. That's been I think over 4 months so far. Maybe longer. I do notice much more mellow and aromatic flavors and smoothness when my cigars been in my humidors for awhile.
