MrGlass Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Thought this might interest some people here. The link below takes you to a paper which researches the effects of smoking bans in bars on drunk driving. It's a bit of a read and for the US, but interesting nonetheless. http://tinyurl.com/2ckmx4t The gist of it: Using geographic variation in local and state smoke-free bar laws in the US, we observe an increase in fatal accidents involving alcohol following bans on smoking in bars that is not observed in places without bans. Basically, people would drive further to a bar where they could still smoke. Nick.
mazolaman Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 yep, very interesting. There a a few knock on effects of smoking bans. Here, streets outside pubs are crammed with smokers,*** butts everywhere, and pubs now smell of farts rather than fags! I'm wondering when overeaters are going to be penalised for their load on the NHS,as smokers are!
Ryan Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I think there was a small spike in that effect along the border in Ireland a few years ago. The Republic introduced the total smoking ban in public places in 2004 (the distinction of being the first country in the world to do so), however the ban didn't come into the UK until 2007. So for a few years there was an increase in trips across to the North to go to pubs, at least for those who live near the border. The ban in the UK put an end to most of that.

Unfortunately this will be used by the non-smoking Nazis to enforce non-smoking bans in other places. Instead of being sensible and allowing grown adults to gather together in designated smoking area. It's easier and "holier" to impose a blanket smoking ban. This will NOT stop people from smoking. This has never worked for anything.
