I see from a few members' image avatars that there are some fans on the forum... so my question is this: what's your pick for 'the Tom Waits of cigars'?

Posted

A lot of Waits' songs speak to a seedier side of the city where the most recognized cigars would be a Phillies Blunt stuffed with weed or an old-timer's half-chewed Hav-A-Tampa.

But in terms of CC's, and of the artist himself, I'd say the Tom Waits of cigars is the SLR Serie A. Like Waits, it doesn't play to a mass audience... not something everyone knows about... and is best appreciated by those with experience.

Who is Tom Waits??

He's a guy who gets to play a few parts in major motion pictures who has a deep raspy singing voice, similar to Louis Armstrong. That was in his younger days. If you saw "Bram Stoker's Dracula" with Gary Oldman, the guy who played Renfield is Tom Waits. They dubbed his voice over Gary Oldman's in a few scenes because they found that Oldman's voice was too weak in some of the outrage yelling he did in the opening. It was Tom Wait's voice that was used in the stronger, louder tones Oldman had to do.

Great singer/songwriter. Started out in the 70's and still going strong. Most of his stuff has an "underground" feel to it... some of it seedy, some sweet, some raunchy, some wild... but all of it brilliant. While I wouldn't say he's ever gone mainstream himself, some of his songs have, such as the Eagles doing his Ol' 55.

Waits hooked into Hollywood doing some soundtrack work, but he's such a natural character that he started getting work as an actor too. I think his first really noteworthy role was Benny in Rumble Fish, pretty much the visual equivalent of his musical style.

He's been in some big box office hits like Cotton Club, Ironweed, and The Two Jakes... and has also been there in some cult classics like the aforementioned Dracula as well as the hilarious (and campy) Mystery Men.

Oooo, good question. I reckon the TW of cigars would have to be the Partagas Lusitania or Upmann Sir Winston.

Why?

Because when a quielty contemplative / reflective / philophically adequate cigar is called for I always reach for these. They may be devoid of melancholy, but have oodles of narrative.

Bolivar belicosos,strong and not subtle.....

Great man,all kinds of music, from Martha to the bone machine to philipino box spring hog!

Rain dogs is great.

He was excellent in the movie "Down by Law" (1986). Very gritty film written and directed by Jim Jarmusch. I was only listening to Rain dogs on the weekend, my favourite album by the man.

Great film

I'm a big Tom Waits fan but this has got me stumped. He's a multifaceted guy and so I feel I need to nominate a cigar with some rough edges, individual and takes no ****, but with some class and complexity to hint at sharp intellect. I'll get back to you.

Have you guys read 'Innocent When You Dream" the collected interviews of Tom Waits?

Absolutely brilliant movie with Tom Waits & Roberto Benigni plus the great John Lurie ( The Lounge Lizards) - I love anything by Jarmusch, but that one's a must-see classic.

"Swordfish trombone" I remember.

I'd also go along with Cazadores, rough & tough.

Definately a Cazadores. Anyone into Tom Waits should seek out his movie "Big Time" and the album Blue Valentines.

Or maybe a bolivar gold medal.

Never heard a bad Tom Waits album,swordfishtrombones,black rider,heart attack and vine,mule variations......etc

Capable of circus like bawling and the most heart breaking ballad.

A yes, that movie aired on swedish television once and I happened to have the TV set on, as I remember doing some reading at the same time. Suddenly I realized that the music was great, and soon I was caught up in the atmosphere of the movie. Been a fan since. Took me some days to track down a record. Wow...

first off waits is my hero! i started smoking with my buddies when i was 14 in hopes of sounding like tom waits (stupid but true). anyhow... i would have to say los statos de lux delirios wins because they are low rent, been hit with the ugly stick, keep getting better with age, have loads of flavor, and are unappreciated.

I love you guys. B)

I'm one of the very lucky... got to actually see him on this very night:

My cousin came back from Mozambique and we each flew in to Atlanta, Georgia to meet up and see Waits. I can still feel the hangover if I squint just right.

Excellent ;) The closest I have got to seeing Tom live is seeing his ex, Rickie Lee Jones when she played in Melbourne recently. :cigar:
