jawofboston Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 This has been a good weekend for large cigars> in addition to a D4 and a succulent Hoyo du Roi (HQ from Czar), I had, and reviwed a RyJ Churchill and a Hoyo DC. This is just a beautiful cigar. Creamy coffee wrapper, not really oily but definitely healthy looking, no large veins at all. At cold just a delicious cafe latte flavor. The first two thirds of this cigar were very consistently sweet cream, light sweet coffee, and buttered toast. The prototypical cuban "twang" was there, but this cigar was just overwhelming flavors of the most decadent cup of capuccino you've every had. The combination with the Sam Adams Summer is not one I would recommend. The citrus of the beer was conflicting with the cigar so I ditched the beer and went to water. The last third started to pick up a bit more wood and got decidedly less sweet, but the cream continued. This cigar was tasty right to the nub. I'd give it a 90+, but I would say it's the type of cigar that would be best if you could smoke it while you work/golf/read. It doesn't evolve that much or really challenge the palette. It's great. But very even in the flavors. As an aside, post-Hoyo I threw some ribs on my cast iron charcoal grill to smoke. While watching them for the three hours they took to cook, I enjoyed a Hoyo du Roi (HQ). The bottle of Bogle Phantom 2006 didn't hurt. Nothing beats ribs! And yes, in the last picture that IS a smoke ring!
Wicky Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Wow. Those ribs look fantastic! Got a pork roast on my fire right now to go with slow cooked jalepeno and hamhock pinto beans. Haven't had a Hoyo DC in a long time. I remember them being pretty tasty.
toto Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Thanks for the great review and photos! you are making me hungry... for both cigars and ribs! I too find most DC to be more "linear" and doesn't evolve over the course of the smoke. Nicely smoked ribs BTW.
Disburden Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Great reviews and nice looking sticks too. Also made me think about eating meat again sometime lol.
