I have a mate Myles local FOH crew) who is coming back from Safari via Joburg and has asked for any personal recommendations on good to great hotels in Johanesburg. Price really not an issue as Myles married well :(

Rob,

I've stayed with my wife at the Gold Reef City Hotel after taking the Blue Train from Cape Town to Joburg and that was a very interesting experience.

It's an old Gold mining town just few minutes from down-town ( believe me - you DON'T want to be in down-town ) Joburg and really oustanding and historically unique.

Very small, old style 19-th century hotel.

While I was still flying, our Lufthansa Crew Hotel in Joburg was the Centurion Lake Hotel in Sandton - that's half-way btw. Joburg and Pretoria, quite nice with shopping ctr and restaurants around the corner.

Prez, being from these parts the best place to stay with easy access (walking distance) to high-end shopping, restaurants, buzzing nightlife, cigar stores (Macanudo lounge and JJ Cale) and located in Johannesburg it would be the Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton Square it's about a 15/20min drive from JHB International Airport. The link i posted has many other options for luxury hotels in and around Johannesburg. As Nino mentioned, you DO NOT want to be in down town Johannesburg... it's a tad rough.

Gold Reef City is fun, it's a Casino/Theme Park based on the gold rush of the last 100 or so years, it's located on the southern side of Johannesburg about 30min from the Airport. Sandton Square is located on the northern side of Joburg much closer to the airport.

Centurion Lake Hotel nino mentioned is in Centurion which is a suburb of Pretoria the capital city, not Sandton. Centurion is roughly 35/45min from the Airport.

Ideally if Myles is as well heeled as you say then Sandton is the place to be. Although with the World Cup finals being played in Soccer City 11th July (next to Gold Reef City) accomodation might prove to be difficult.

Gracias, Padrino !

I always thought that Centurion was in Sandton ...... that's where I watched the epic Springbok vs All Blacks final in June 1995.

But I remember now that it was closer to Pretoria.
