gammon Posted July 4, 2010 Posted July 4, 2010 . there goes the hood... Now, as a canadian I will have to pay more for the same product in Cuba. Big Mac's and Star Buck (coffee), KFC and alike will be springing up everywhere... the only Cubans eating there will be Cuban americans. All imported food stuff from the States and the average Cuban will not afford it. look what happened to China... the americans went in... The locals could not afford the food only the tourists and the high officials, and people with silver lining in their pockets. The Chinese government made the companies not take the profit out, and the compaines devised a solution by building factories there to make those trinkets for the american market (yes, those little toys with the happy meal). Can the Cuban economy handle this large influx of american tourist, Only certain part of the Cuban industries will benifit, but will the remaining average Cuban get a piece of the pie? The Chinese have a large population and many have a small saving account, but do the Cubans have one or any natural resources to benefit? The Chinese govenment hold the key to the present economy by holding down the value of their money (RM). Flip this to the Cubans, I can only see another Haiti. If the present Cuban government holds a steady hand, maybe, this will accelerate the benefits for the Cubans, in the long run. But, given the amount of collusion, this will fail the people of Cuba. Cuba has a highly educated population, but will they have to resort to gambling, prostitution and the ills of society to gain a living? --The reason why Castro told the americans to move out-- when the Americans are allowed to travel and have free trade? this will only work if the economy in Cuba is boosted with the IMF and the embargo lifted, help Cuba with updated 21st century technology. This might work....
SandmanTR Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Here's a bit of an update. http://peoplesworld.org/senators-confident...uba-travel-ban/ It appears that it's starting to gain real steam and has a lot of supporters...
tdlfoto Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I loved visiting Cuba and intend to go back this fall. Ostensibly, lifting the embargo and permitting travel is a good thing, but I can't help but think about the downside...and there is downside.
