My favourite, by far, is the pre-1995 Partagás Lusitania. The post-1995 version is not in the same class, and is eclipsed by the Vegas Robaina Don Alejandro. Mind you, I've experienced some great Saint Luis Rey Double Coronas too! Recent Ramón Allones Gigantes have been disappointing compared with those of more than a decade ago. The last time I acquired a box of Gigantes, every cigar was plugged!!

On the DC front, I would have to go with the Party Lusi. I've not had any older than 07, so can't compare it to older production. I'm a big fan of the HdM DC as well, when I want a lighter large format smoke.

I'd certainly agree with the pre 95 Lusis. I had a number from 92 which were probably the best regular cigars I've smoked. Post 95, I'd go with 01 & 07 SLR DCs, 02 RAGs & 08 Lusis. Haven't had much luck with VRDAs. I've had 01s & 04s and both were pretty bland.

For me aged HdM DC beats everything but you have to give them time minimum 5 years, if you can afford get them in the 50 cab and store them well.

Partagas Lusi's and HUP Sir Winnie's top my list. Personally I like the Punch DC as well.

Also the SLR DC with some age is a favorite.

Sorry to hear about your poor luck with the RAG. Last box I had was very enjoyable.

Two cabinets of the decade have been recent Punch Double Corona and Partagas Lusitania. Either one of these would be next to the word "Perfection" in the dictionary.

While the Sir Winnie is a nice cigar, it is not a DC.

My favourite would be the Lusi, with the HdM DC as a good second. Have yet to sample the Punch DC.

Lusitanias have always been my favorite. To me nothing beats that rich, creamy, earthy flavour. Perfect

I've always prefered the Punch DC over all the competition. It has that creamy taste I love, and never let's me down. Second on the list would be the Parti Lusitania. The other just fall by the wayside.

This thread inspired me to open an ABR 08 box of RAGs today. Very impressive cigar. Good draw & lots of flavor progression for a young cigar. Starts fairly mild, but medium to strong by the end. I rarely nub a DC, but this one was no problem.

I had a dream last nigjht that I came down to smoke with you and you left town when you heard I was coming. :)

Did either of those cigars you listed above have any guts? I find the Lusi to be mild and Punch rarely does it for me. I find the RAG and the HdM to be more flavourful and the VDRA boring as another poster described.

In general I believe the Churchills and up are rolled mild on purpose so most can handle the power build up on the long cigars. Is there any truth to this?

I'd be surprised if that were true. I've experienced "Churchills and up" that have been anything but mild.

Generalizations are difficult for the double coronas. I have had excellent and poor boxes of all the DCs. All things being equal (i.e. a good box of each for comparison) I will take a Partagas Lusitania every time. This is merely based on my strong preference (obsession) with the Partagas flavor profile.

That being said, I also like the VR DA and SLR DC. I am less fond of the RA Gigantes or the Punch DC. The Hoyo is so extreme for me. Sometimes boring. Sometimes profound.

So based on 'best representative'..... (this is really just my flavor profile preference...) I will avoid the 'most consistent' quagmire. Most of us don't see hundreds of boxes (well in a day at least...lol)

1. Partagas Lusitania

2. Hoyo DC

3. VR DA

4. SLR DC

5. Punch DC

6. Ramon Allones Gigantes

It's tough though, I always struggle between the Ramon Allones and Partagas on which I prefer.

Mel, Both cabs went to members who specifically were seeking great examples of that particular cigar. The Lusitania feedback has been sensational from the cab which is being smoked regularly. My experience with the recent lusis is that they are rich. Still medium bodied but rich on the palate. The Punch DC in the cabs I have only had a handful of recent offerings. The particular cab I referred to went to a collector and hasn't been touched as far as I am aware. The Punch DC I have experienced from recent quality cabs have had a real weight of palate, viscous mouthfeel but are a few years away from revealing their best. Serious quality and potential. Right now it is the Lusi cabs which are more approachable.

Punch doubles with >5 years of age on them are good, specially if you can get them in the cabinets. Sir Winstons too.

Ashamed to say I haven't ever smoked a Partagas Lusitania, apparently I am missing out on something great.
