Hello, the suspect cigar forum is very interesting. I hope I haven't been stung by fakes before, I don't think I have anyway! I guess being in Australia and mostly buying within Oz makes things a bit safer.

I have a question, which cigars are the most likely to be faked?

Is it only cohiba's, montecristo and LE's ?? What are the chances of buying fake diplomatico, hoyo epi range, bolivar PC's , partagas shorts, rass, basically your 'second tier' cubans (im not sure if this is the right classification but you get me..)

I'm just interested...

For the sake of conversation we can save the "buy from czar and you will be fine" ;)

Thanks everyone!

dicko...I would say that the most counterfeited brand would be Cohiba...by far. The other big brands would likely be Montecristo and Romeo y Julieta. Counterfeiters would likely focus only on the biggest brands as they are the most recognizeable and would be easier to sell. They would also focus on the larger vitolas as the price point on these is higher. Esplendidios, Siglo VI, Churchills, No. 2s. Just makes it more profitable and economical for counterfeiters to operate in this manner.

I think that there are some companys/vendors/individuals that will make a fake any brand just for a few bucks. Generally, its more the popular marcas that get counterfeited, but say its a street vendor, chances are they have NO authentic stock from HSA.

*By far Cohiba and it's special editions are the most faked ones. In the days when Alejandro Robaina came to fame, there were a lot of his double churchill sized Alejandros faked all over the place. In the early years past it was hard to find very many Monte No. 2's, at least not in the volume of the Cohibas. The ones that made their way to persons weren't even very good fakes! Next were the R&J churchills. Cohiba Esplendidos and Robustos outnumber everything, though.

Habanos could have been a little more creative with this LE for 2010. We already have a cohiba robusto! haha

Wish the other three came with the glass-top!! ;):perfect10:

There is (was?) a website that sold labels, bands, etc., that went beyond the top three. Don’t know the prevalence of use of these.

They are still around (I refuse to name them :) but pm me if you want info) and they do have a wide selection of bands including commemorative ones.

When in St Lucia, everyone was selling glass top boxes of Esplendidos in boxes of 10. Well, I just had to have one for the novelty of it. Got the guy down to $20.

Also, when in Cuba if you're walking around smoking a cigar the fake peddlers will swarm you. All selling Cohibas. Montecristos & RyJ. As they don't take no for an answer, I started asking for boxes of SLR Serie A. They had none & left me alone. :)

Why, was it good?

LOL, you got it brother. Actually plan to tap out a quick review as they have their good points.

Wait a second, are you telling me that Cohibas don't come in glass top boxes, OMG. Anyone want any Esplendidos?

So how does one spot fake cigars? is it the box, the labels, the wrapper?

It's the full kit and kaboodle. It's the combination of everything. If one thing is off, you need to start looking at the combination of other things.

Man, too damn funny!!! Both of these happened to me.

Firstly, in St. Lucia, my wife and I had our honeymoon there in June 2006. Beautiful country - we had our own little private villa resort, just outside of the town of Soufriere. Awesome. Anyways, going into Soufriere for a dinner out with some other honeymooners there, a guy came up to us and tried to sell any of us the exact same thing - glass top Esplendidos. They looked horrible. Anywho, my wife, drunk as a skunk that day (hey, we had our own private pool and my hot nurse wife has a couple of smokin' bikinis - damnit, I was feeding that girl some daquiris!!!), she offered to buy me the box as an added little gift. My reply? "Honey, baby, sweetheart - they're fake. If you blow your money on those, you're not getting any for the rest of the week."

I couldn't believe that I'd actually get a chance to see a box of those in person. The counterfeiting quality was absolutely horrendous. I think some stuff was even printed with an inkjet printer - some of the labelling was starting to smudge in the humidity, kind of like watercolours. Pathetic.

Dear gawd, please don't tell me you're serious. I hope this was tongue in cheek! <_<

Last year when I was in the Yucatan visiting the famous Uxmal Mayan ruins there was a shop seeing 100% fake Cohibas and R & J's. All the infamous glass top, didn't even bother checking the price.

I went to Mexico this year and my resort had a lady set up in the lobby every night selling cigars. To bad all her cigars were fake, but they actually were good fakes!!!! I am smart and looked at the box codes, there were none!!! I bought from the gift shop and the great LCDH store in town. Thanks for the great service Hugo!!!

This article does bring to mind a recent article in Smoke mag. about counterfeited cigars. Would you believe Hermano Chusano actually had his own Cusano cigars in that article as if persons would want to counterfeit his? There were a lot of photos of his, and some Fuente brand cigars in the column of the article about smokes most likely to be counterfeited. ?????
