A controversial German anatomist has stirred outrage after he has started to sell body parts of donated cadavers.

Dr Gunther von Hagens, who gained fame worldwide for hosting television series Anatomy For Beginners, which aired in Australia on SBS, has begun selling off parts of corpses donated to him.

Customers can buy a pair of testicles for $520 or a set of smokers' lungs for $5200 from the anatomist, German newspaper Bild reported.

Famous for reconstructing dead bodies in life-like poses in exhibitions, after patenting the preservation technique of plastination, Dr von Hagens is now selling donated skulls for $940, heads for $2100 and entire corpses for $82,000.

Though it has attracted heavy criticism from the Catholic Church in Germany, Dr von Hagen is not breaking the law by selling the body parts.

People can donate their bodies to Dr von Hagens for anatomical purposes, after which he is free to dispose of them as he wishes, according to German law.

Customers can also buy preserved fish for $720 and preserved chickens for $360 from his 'Plastinarium' in the small German town of Guben.

Dr von Hagens has also announced plans to sell the body parts online.

MIKA: I have seen this doctors documentaries and whilst I respect his work as a doctor, I find this a little sickening morally.

But to tell you the truth I can't work out if I'm more disgusted that the doctor is selling the body parts or the people buying them!? :cigar:

There's another website like this called boneclones.com or something like that. They make reproductions of skeletons of pretty much anything you ask for. A (particularly morbidly humored) friend of mine has a fully-movable human baby skeleton in his house. Worst position I've seen it in: Standing by the front door wearing a tiny top hat and tails.

I presume he sells these body parts for research purposes...I wonder who else would want to buy someone's old bollocks? A nice pair of dangly earrings for the wife? :cigar:

I'm sure you could find some nice things for a dining table setting. It would definitely generate some interesting table talk... :cigar:

"Why Hattie, where did you ever find these interesting napkin rings?"

"Oh, I bought them off a website. Foreskins are great as they'll stretch to fit any sized napkin. And an old pair of buttocks makes a wonderful knife block...."

Some people just love the macabre and I could see those folks buying some of this stuff just for decoration. They do have some pretty neat pieces in collection though. Course, thats just me.

I've been to his Body Worlds exhibition and it's actually really worth seeing. They have multiple bodies that display different part, diseases, medical surgeries, bodies in action (sports, sex), full circulatory & nervous systems. They also show the difference between healthy & diseased organs (alzheimers, emphysema). It may come across as a weird exhibition but it’s done quite tastefully & respectfully. If you every have the chance to see, I highly recommend it.
