Ken Gargett Posted May 28, 2010 Author Posted May 28, 2010 He was not elected, his party didn't even get a majority. He was designated chancellor by the senile president but he was not elected democratically. apols. was just having a go at rob.
frenchkiwi Posted May 29, 2010 Posted May 29, 2010 just had a chat with a japanese mate yesterday and he said that no-one really enjoys whale meat over there - it was the cheap stuff they got in school lunches etc and everyone had to eat after the WWII when food was scarce. only reason they still hunt it is that there is an industry set up around it and in the complex slow-moving game of japanese politics they have a strong and longstanding lobby with the ruling parties. and now trying to turn it into another "our tradition" vs. "western interference" issue.

To me, none of this makes much sense. First - one "mate" speaks for the whole populace? It's hard to give credence to. As to the second part, it's basically saying that the government subsidizes the hunts, and that little of the meat is actually purchased by the people? What is this industry set up around then?
