PADDYWHACK121272 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Watched 'I am Cuba' last night (1964, director Mikhail Kalatozov). Well worth a look for anyone generally interested in Cuban culture (as most Habanophiles are I reckon). Some of the technical / visual work is amazing (long tracking shots etc..) and more than makes up for the fairly clunky propaganda aspects of the film. Very evocative impression of the atmosphere in the country at the time and amazing to see footage of Batista era Havana.
khomeinist Posted April 12, 2010 Posted April 12, 2010 This is an important film in the historical sense. I watched it on a date once. My companion was EXTREMELY unimpressed (too Godard or something). I was amused by her reaction. This film (like many post-colonial, new-wave inspired films) is INDEED quite clunky. But I am a lefty sorta guy and appreciate avant-guard attempts. Worth watching. I actually think more people need to see the Western stereotypes portrayed for pre-revolution Cuba. Socialist Cuba is problematic but pre-revolution Cuba was no better.

Agreed - definitely worth a watch....interesting glimpse of a cigar factory at one point during the funeral procession scene. my wife nodded-off watching it but then, apart form good rum and music, she does not really share my fascination with Cuba
mazolaman Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 This is a great film, for the excellent cinematography, and a glimpse of Cuban life.If you know it's directors origins, you can forgive the propaganda.
Disburden Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 As something that's pretty left out there I wouldn't mind checking this out myself. Thanks for the information!
