Davidoff Dom Perignon

I received this cigar back in 1995 from a good friend of mine for being in his wedding. If I remember, he paid $80-$90 USD for it back then form a trusted source (no box code but I remember him telling me it was from 1988...and I believe the last year they were made was 1990?). Anyways, back to the review.

Construction was perfect, no hard/soft spots. Draw was also perfect, just firm enough to give some resistance. Flavor was hard to describe since I had never tasted this cigar or anything like it. I would describe the flavor as exotic spice and cocoa flavors, starting mildly at first and ending fairly medium bodied with more pronounced cocoa flavors towards the end. I though it was an absolutely FANTASTIC cigar; too bad it would cost me an arm and a leg to get another one of these, if I could even find one for sale. I smoked it with one of my best friends (actually he got me started cigar smoking back in 1994) while drinking a glass of Grand Marnier Cuvee Centenaire. One of the better smoking nights I have had. :-)

Great review, thanks.

Not nitpicking or anything of the sort, but I am quite sure that Davidoff is not a Cuban brand from Habanos.

• You must have purchased the cigar from an Authorised Habanos retailer who only purchases his Habanos cigars from the Authorised regional distributor. From the Review rules.

ok Fine, call me nitpicker... :-P

Great review man. Sounds like the perfect trifecta of a GREAT cigar, GREAT beverage and GREAT company. Glad you enjoed it.

I can only hope to try a Davidoff one day. I will either sac up and buy a few or maybe one might fall into my hand one day. Only wishes;-)

Nice review.

I had the pleasure of smoking a couple of circa 1987 Davidoff #1s. The only way to describe a Cuban Davidoff is decadent. The #1s taste like swiss chocolate. I still have a couple left. Incedible flavor for a 18+ year old cigar.:-D

I am jealous, I have always wanted to try a Dom.

Jay,

Are you saying this Davidoff isn't a cuban cigar or just that it isn't/wasn't distrbuted by Habanos SA?

Jay....you are wrong on this one ;-)

Davidoffs were Cuban made until 1990 after a dispute with Cuba saw him transfer his maufacturing of the white label line to the Dominican Republic under the legendary Hendrik Kelner . He had already transferred manufacturing of lesser Davidoff Lines to Honduras in 1983 in order to circumvent the embargo and maintain a presence in the US market.

Great review!

» Nice review... aren't these things hard to find... and if you do find them,

» expensive as hell?

VERY hard (at least for me) to find. Yes they are a fortune, but remember, we picked these up back in 1995, so price wasn't TOO bad, although $80-$90 was and still is pricy. Last I heard, Cigar Afficionado had a little article about Hong Kong maybe 2 months ago, and they said that the going price for the Dom Perignons was $500+ USD PER STICK!! I think I will pass on any more at that price :-)
