ChanceSchmerr Posted January 19, 2010 Posted January 19, 2010 This evening, with the fierce winter winds dying down for a little while here on the BC Coast, I thought it was time to try the Diplomaticos #1, a single I picked up in Toronto over the holidays. Impossible to find, this was the first one I'd seen in a long while, and probably the last one I'll see for a while yet! The latest discontinued cigar I've tried in my endless quest of cigar discovery! Can't recall the date on the box, I seem to recall it was 2002. It was also a nice way to forget the horridness of a Sancho Panza Bachilleres I tried to smoke at lunch - a ludicrisly packed cigar that drew like a wooden dowel. Tossed it after 10 minutes that were devoid of any generated smoke. Feel and Appearance - Almost Claro, not a lot of oils evident on the wrapper. A good weight for a lonsdale, though. The Aroma was similar to a Diplo 3.....excited! Pre-Light Draw - Ever-so-slightly tight, but evident and consistent. Woody flavours First couple of puffs - Tasty! Solid Woody core flavours, a mix of Oak and cedar with a bit of cocoa. No real spicy or harsh tastes, just a walk through the forest. Love it. First Third - Building on those wood flavours. The years have smoothed out the flavour of this cigar nicely, no rough edges on this baby! Cocoa is intermittent. Middle Third - Sharp turn to the left. Now, instead of the forest, I get the forest FLOOR! Wet earth flavours are most pronounced, only hints of the oaky taste remain. Still smooth. Final Third - Again, back to the trees, as the woody taste returns, this time accompanied by a cedar sweetness near the very end. Charming! Only in the last few puffs do I notice the nicotine buzz, this has been one smooth smoke. Draw/Burn - Near flawless. Any slight angle in burn is corrected as quickly as it appeared. Very good construction on this cigar. Final Thoughts - Very much enjoyed this smoke, as much as a walk through a forest park here. Forgot all about the Sancho Panza Dowel Bachilleres I tried at lunch. A worth cigar of the Diplomaticos name, and a damn shame I won't soon find some more! 9.1/10
Cubanface Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Thanks for the review. It's just a shame when you get cigars with a bad draw.
MNSmoker Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Thanks for the review. These are fantastic cigars and are still available at a couple of places. I just recently picked up 3 boxes.
shrink Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Yes, a very nice cigar and another loss for those of us who like small ring smokes. If you can find any mid-05's, they will reward you with a nice medium-bodied cigar, profiling the unique Diplo "paprika" spice, with a bit of sweetness on the finish. A real nice weekend afternoon smoke.
PigFish Posted January 25, 2010 Posted January 25, 2010 The Diplomatico #1 is really one all time classic cigar. I weep when I think of the loss of entire line; a travesty! I did a little stocking up on these recently and have boxes ranging in from several years in the past decade. Great review Mate... and a wonderful cigar. Cheers! - Piggy
