iPAD

apple-ipad1-420-90.jpg

My wife and I purchased one each of these units last weekend.

Initially, I was completely against these thinking they were just an oversized iPhone but after tinkering about with one, I learnt they were a great deal more and offered an array of newer apps for various interests.

One feature I particularly love is being able to log onto the FOH forum where previosuly whilst sitting outside enjoying a cigar, I'd often use my iPhone to read up on threads/posts but found it difficult to juggle a cigar and attempt to type on the tiny key pad. I no longer have that problem anymore and absolutely love the iPad!

What are your thoughts on these, do you have one, want one, hate them?

If you like them, what are your favourite apps?

I for one highly recommend....wait for it.... F1 2010 ;)

It’s a very cool app and I for one love it.

The app was launched last year and was voted by Apple one of the best 25 launches of 2009. It gives live timing and the ability to follow the race a new way using a 3D track map. This has been refined this year so that it self-centres on the driver you are following in the race, making it easier to follow.

I believe it will transform the viewing habits of hardcore F1 fans, giving them a much fuller picture of the race.

The 3D positional map makes it much easier to understand what is happening in the race because you can see all the drivers all the time and follow all the stories, whereas the TV feed can only follow one story at a time and often the driver you least wish to be watching (Vettel).

So for a race like Malaysia, for example, you can see the progress of Hamilton through the field much more clearly. It is also very useful to see how cars are positioned relative to each other around the time of pit stops.

The app also allows you to watch any past sessions of the season and you can also use a slider to go to any spot in the session. This is especially great when watching a replay on tv.

This app is a little pricey, around $32.00 but well worth it should you like F1.

For those with other interests, I'm sure you can find it in the app store. :)

Maybe Czars can release an app for their store?? ;)

I have a general dislike of Apple products, but this stems from me disliking that the iPod required iTunes and it grew from there.

Can't see me buying one anytime soon.

There were some interesting comparisons made:

By the way, is your next purchase this: http://tinyurl.com/2bb4oh3 ? ;)

IMHO, I don't know what the fuss is all about. For what you are paying, you are getting little bang for your buck. There's no HDMI output, no camera, no USB port, you can't expand the memory, you can't watch movies in widescreen format (only 4:3), you can only use Apple approved apps, no ability to multitask, and worst of all, you have to sell your soul to Steve Jobs!!

I make it a point never to buy the first version of any new tech. Sooner or later, there will be a better PC based version that is fully customisable.

I'll go buy an iPed (chinese knock-off) before I buy an iPad. At least then I can say, "Employees of the company who made this don't commit suicide on a regular basis!" ;)

I was talking to my missus about this the other day, an ad for the Ipad came on tv and the conversation went something like this:

Her: I want an iPad!

Me: Why?

Her: Because they are cool

Me: But why do you need a tablet? You're not a designer. Why not just get a good computer? Or a net book if portability is what you want?

Her: You don't get it, iPads are cool.

I think that pretty much sums up the whole thing behind them :-P

Not bashing people who do buy them for what they are, there just seems to be a lot of knee-jerk purchases because they are the latest apple gadget.

My boss is a huge Gadget junkie so of course he got one of these things.

After playing with it for an hour or so I'm struggling to see any point to the thing. It's filling a non existant niche if you ask me.

At least I won't be selling my soul to Jobs. I'll wait for a better PC version to come out.

I love the guys how hate these products and the guys how think they are the greatest tools in the world, you are really the same people. You guys who hate it really know a lot about this product.

Love it or hate it you all still talk about it, I don't recall a conversation on this forum about the release of the Kindle or the latest windows software.

Here is a question, what is the alternate? I don't know and would like to find out if there is anything that comes close?

By the way I haven't got an iPad.

How about these alternatives; WePad, Lenovo Skylight Smartbook and the ExoPC?

Where do I go to line up for them at 3am in the morning.

You're on fire Smithy!!

The force is strong with you.

Wow, what a great response, I guess the door was open for both positive and negative points here.

I for one was in a similar way when iPhones were released, so many friends and family 'assimilated' to the iPhone, I held off for one more year but in the end, I too own an iPhone and can not imagine anything better.

Almost everywhere I look or go, I see the iPhone.

Many companies have made copied versions, but I don't see many with the knock offs.

I also see a staggering amount of people who have iPhones so I'm sure the iPad will be just as popular in time. You make it what it is by selecting the apps that interest you.

For example, do you travel to work by transport? Now you can read the paper on the iPad in detail, surf the net, watch a movie or show, read an ebook.

Sure, those could be done on many other devices, I guess each to their own?

If the iPad was as cheap as the 'Iped', I'd still buy the iPad if even for the name simply because the 'Iped' sounds like it belongs in a jail somewhere and out of childrens hands!!!!!!! :D;)

Why does this remind me of Apple being the Borg... Resistance is Futile!!!

I have to admit, the iPhone is everywhere.

Even our Prez have one (assuming he does not lose it or give it away for free drinks).

With the iPhone 4, I am thinking it is almost time for me to be "assimilated" too.

I have to admit that these are tools that you have to make as useful to you as you want.

For someone who is just a low tech "user" = my wife, first gen iPad will not be good for her. This is because she will open the box, start it and complain to me that there is nothing useful for her (god bless her soul).

I then will have to spend the next 3 hrs loading it up and wondering why I put myself through such pain. However, for my 3yr daughter, totally different story as she just want to watch movies / cartoons on it, this will be perfect though expensive toy.

An amusing post.

I just love the haters. It reminds me of the age old Ford verses GM argument.

I have both Apple and PC products and these days Im leaning a little more towards the apple gear.

I used to carry a laptop with me for work and just got tired of the time it would take to boot up and shut down if I wanted to access information I had stored on it.

Yes I bought an iPad and I'm using it for scheduling jobs and logging work that I have completed.

I can store machine schematics on it and view the information at the touch of a button, no waiting for it to decide if it wants to come to life or not.

No its not a replacement for a regular PC but it is a good addition to the tools that I use in my job.

I'm writing this on an iPad right now.

If you want one get one, if you don't then don't.

I say don't knock it till you've tried it. If you haven't tried it then in my opinion you can't knock it.

Jase, you read my mind. The day Apple takes over the world, if it hasn't already, it's time for me to check out. Dude, there are cheaper and better players if Pika wants to watch cartoons. Don't forget, no widescreen format on the iPad.

Oz, sorry but I disagree. True trend setters? Maybe. True visionaries, not exactly. I still recall back in '96 Jobs stating,"Good artists copy, great artists steal. And we have always been shameless about stealing great ideas."

Do I own Apple products? Yep, I have to admit I've got an iPod (my bro gave it to me as a gift). But I also have an old iRiver, minidisc player, etc. Will I ever buy an Apple product? Most likely someday. Will I buy into the hype? Never.

Why does it have to be an argument about buying into hype. Why cant it just be about seeing a use for something and adopting it.

It's all I ever hear from Apple users!

I have no problem with their products, I use one myself. But following Jobs like he is the IT messiah is BS! What is so revolutionary about Apple products? Have they come out with any that doesn't already exist in another format? Come out with a truly original and unique product and I will take it at face value. However, come out with an existing product with a few improvements and call it revolutionary? I call shenanigans!!

It's simple Warren, there are those who feel that if you don't think the same way they do, there must be something wrong with you!

We're a Mac family..my wife is a huge photographer and we take a lot of video so we like iPhoto and iMovie. We are planning to get an iPad and not because they are cool, but because it will actually servce a purpose. My wife is a public school teacher (all of their computers are macs) and she teaches a weekend college course throughout the year, which means I have almost ZERO time on the computer.

We dont' really want to go out and spend $1,300 or more on the cheapest mac and we honnestly don't need anohter computer. We're perfectly content with one, but with the iPad, I'll be able to surf the net and catch up with FOH, watch movies, email etc while she is working away! I also travel internationally for work and it would be a great gadget to take along on long haul flights and help pass the time in airports. I think we will end up getting the new iPhone as well. I don't even own a smartphone right now, but this might be the time to go and head and do it.

We are not Apple fanatics or devotees, but the products Apple offers fit very well with our interests, hobbies, life styles etc....

To each their own.......

Shenanigans?

What are you 80 or something.

I follow no man nor call him messiah.

Jobs or Gates what's the difference, they both make a product and then try to convince us that we need it.

I think they call that success in business don't they.
