Omskakas Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Monte Espe 2's I just got have very greenish wrappers. Most green I've ever seen on Cubans. Do you have any experience, does this affect the taste?
Wicky Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I had a box of #1s OCT 07 with the same pale wrappers and light brown bands. Don't know how good they might have been since the were rolled so tight I could barely smoke em. Hate when that happens in the whole box! The M4s and Edmundos I've smoked recently have been very good. Dark wrappers and a darker band as well.
Colt45 Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 I've a box of Upmann Sir Winstons who's wrappers have a slight greenish tinge (relatively speaking) - fantastic cigars. Give yours a try and let us know what you think.
Onsto Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Green (candela) wrappers were apparently very popular in the 1960s. I wasnt even born until '79 so I don't have it first hand, but I sincerely doubt there will be a significant flavour variation as a result of the paler/greenish wrapper. I know wrapper to flavour ratio is a somewhat contentious issue, but I am generally a believer that it's not an influence. I've recently been experimenting with non cubans (working in Chicago so had access to an entirely different selection) and had a Rocky Patel Maduro that was advertised to be especially strong flavoured as a result of the maduro wrapper. Long story short, these cigars are dyed dark (even more disgusting as a result, not only does the thing taste awful it also leaves brown stains on your lips, truly a hideous concoction). It was a very strongly flavoured cigar, but evidently had a pale wrapper made darker by the application of some kind of boot polish, or **** or something. This isn't a rejection of all things non cuban by any stretch - had any number which surprised me with how good they were. I will happily say that I will never smoke a Rocky Patel product again though!

samb Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 Are you referring to the green spots on the wrappers or the wrappers themselves? The green spots are "water spots" where a drop of water got on the leaf during production and are in no way a effect on flavor. As for the wrappers themselves, x2 on the above post.

A bit off topic but I had an Alec Bradley Tempus Creo about 3 weeks ago......and I swear this one was dyed too - I got a bunch of oily brown crap on my lips and fingers - cigar tasted ok, but no thanks when it comes to staining me like that. I know exactly what you mean!!!
dicko Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 had some cohiba's with similar greenish wrappers. tasted fine, actually don't mind the look
jacksfull Posted June 21, 2010 Posted June 21, 2010 I had a '97 box of MC Especiales (#1) with lighter wrappers much like your Esp#2's. They were very, very good... extremely smooth. I have one cigar left from that box that I've been hoarding. I don't know if the wrapper color was atypical for the time of not. I have a more recent box of '09 Esp#2's with colorado wrappers and they are also very good (for their youth). These younger ones are a bit stronger. Whether that's age, date of origin, or the influence of the wrapper I do not know. All things being equal, I'm assuming the blend is intended to be the same for both the Esp #1 & #2.

Wrapper shade in general. Visually, I don't like it. I hope they smoke good.
Omskakas Posted August 3, 2010 Author Posted August 3, 2010 I've smoked two from the box (LSO JUN 08). The first one was mainly grassy and secondly chocolatey, the second other way around. Some toastiness as well. Both were enjoyable but still tasted young, especially last thirds. In few years these will be just perfect.
rckymtn22 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 I picked up a single P SD#4 in Cuba a few years ago that was very green. So green I was thinking it was a fake when compared to other P SD#4's I picked up later. I smoked it right down to the nub, I thought it was very tasty!
El Presidente Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Just another shade of the wrapper colour spectrum it would at a guess represent around 5% of all wrappers. i try no to choose them when selecting cigars more for the visual amenity than anything else. However I have had absolute cracker greenish shade wrapper cigars.
Leopolis Semper Fidelis Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 Personally, from an aesthetic point of view, I can't stand green-wrappered cigars. They look like puke. This is not to deny they may be great in taste. Only dark, oily wrappers for me!
SamuraiJack Posted August 4, 2010 Posted August 4, 2010 I had some really green looking PLPCs once, and they were all great.
