Pre-light thoughts: The wrapper appearance was more towards Claro in color, slightly veined and lightly oiled with no lumpiness. It was firm and gave the slightest bit when lovingly squeezed. The cap and foot were perfect. The secondary band was slightly askew.

Pre-light aroma was overwhelmingly cedar with the slightest hint of vanilla and honey, the draw was effortless.

The foot was toasted with a single flame torch being careful not to let the flame engage the tobacco. This resulted in a substantial release of the previously hinted at vanilla and honeyed notes.

The 1st 1/3rd provided a smooth easy draw with ample amounts of swirling smoke. The mouth taste is cedar and slight tannin (but not unpleasant). The vanilla was still there but the honey had disappeared. The ash was gray/black and dense and traces of the wrapper veins could be seen in it. The burn became slightly crooked as it entered the 2nd 1/3rd.

The 2nd 1/3rd taste remained unchanged although I began to get a faint whiff of ammonia. The ash made it about 2” before it gave up the ghost. This corrected the slightly crooked burn. The lighter vanilla and honey notes were replaced with pepper. The cigar remained a cool smoke with no harshness.

As I continued to smoke the cigar down to the nub, all pretenses of the more subtle flavors when away and I was left with nothing but a pepper bomb. After dropping it into the ashtray its job done my lips where left with that familiar tingle of CC tobacco.

Parting thoughts: I started out with about a half a box of these and have been trying them from time to time. While I think they may still be young I’m impressed with them enough to have purchased another box to lay down for a longer nap. I hold the R&J brand in esteem and have high expectation for this particular stick in the future. I’m going to be periodically sampling the remainder of the first half box I have and will try and update or add to the review as time goes by.

I have always enjoyed this cigar. Mine have changed dramatically since 07 and are getting better and better. Have not tried recent production so maybe time for a box as I am getting low!

Tried one of these a few weeks ago, didn't really enjoy it. Yeah it was pretty young so maybe that had something to do with it but I really have to say that RYJ's have not impressed me lately.
