habanohal Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Thanx all for the replies on last thread about beads to lower RH. Now te next question is after they are in cabinet, how long till I can expect Humidity to drop?? Should I put them in a bowl ( the are in mesh right now) or just spred the mesh bags out throughout cabinet? I noticed when I put them in and just laid them on the shelves, that they leave a water spot. Did I over water them? Well I followed the directions and added 2 tbs of distilled water to each pound and shook them up real good. Now I have them over the vent to try to dry them out a little??????
CigarmanTim Posted July 11, 2009 Posted July 11, 2009 Curious....if you were trying to lower rh why did you add any water to them? If you are trying to raise rh you simply put a bowl of distilled water at the bottom of the humidor. The beads in a few days will hydrate themselves. Some say adding water directly to the beads will split them. I'm not sure. I do know that if you want to lower rh you don't add any water at all. If you are seeing water spots I suggest you immediately take the beads out and let them air out for a day or two...assuming you don't live in a high humidity area. I use mesh bags to srpead the humidity regulation out. I also go with more beads than they suggest....about 1.5 to 2 x's more.
El Presidente Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Welcome to trial and error Hal Dry the beads out and put them back in the humidor. You can leave them in the mesh bags but spread them at the back of each shelf. Should only take a couple of days to stabilize.
habanohal Posted July 12, 2009 Author Posted July 12, 2009 I just followed the directions. Yes im a knuckl head when it comes to that....
Guest rob Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Ya. Agreed on the point of drying them out. If you want to lower humidity you need to have them able to absorb it from the atmosphere in your humidor. Having them moist when they enter the humidor will limit the amount the can absorb before they reach saturation. Also, if they are leaving a water spot where you have them sitting - that is a clear sign you have them waaaaaay to wet - Beads that are maintaining a good 62% - to 70% environment will leave no water spot behind when you take them out.
El Presidente Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 I just followed the directions. Yes im a knuckl head when it comes to that.... The instructions are perfect for a new humidor or to substitute a foam based humidifier Th drop humidity you want the little buggers to be dry.
jquest63 Posted July 12, 2009 Posted July 12, 2009 Dry them out and just place throughtout the humidor. To speed things up a little and to better distribute moisture, recommend placing one or two battery operated fans inside the humidor.
