HawaiiBill Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I recently had some OUTSTANDING late 90 Fonseca#1 and 01 Quai Dorsey coronas. Both, while mild, were well balanced and were full of flavor. The QDC were especially wonderful. Sadly I smoked my way through them and would like to find something similar. In past years I tried these same cigars while young and did not care that much for them. It seems the milder cigars need significant aging to come around. However, I was wondering if these (or any others? Like the Choix Supreme) are smoking well at young age (post 07) since they started adding aged filler? Has anyone discovered some great milder cigars in recent production? Any suggestions/recommendations would be most appreciated!
Jimmy2 Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 Hard for me to say as the last two + years most CC have been stronger than they use to be. Hope some can chime in but recent production CC that have been milder in the past have picked up more strenth. But most have been rich in flavor young which is a plus...
FlyFishingDude Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I'm just yanking your chain, but what's wrong with "paco loco" or maui WoW wee???

They are prefect for a morning smoke and sometimes as nightcap.

jms2788 Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I have a box of ERDM PCs I find to be mild, but that's just me.
bassman Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I've found recent SLR Serie A to be much milder than the 02s & 03s I know & love. Aloha Bill!
jeromeroselli Posted March 15, 2009 Posted March 15, 2009 I recently had a young HDM2 that was nice and mild, light earthy flavors

If you have acclimated your palate to '01 Quai D'orsay Coronas I regret to inform you that finding cigars that will replace those will likely be an uphill battle. I wish I had some sage words of advice here but I don't. I tend to find JL cigars on the lighter, more floral side, you might try some samples of those. -Piggy

The recent petit coronas are powerhouse smokes, in my limited experience.
HawaiiBill Posted March 15, 2009 Author Posted March 15, 2009 Thanks guys, that gives me a few ideas. I will just have to TRY to find more of those!
PigFish Posted March 16, 2009 Posted March 16, 2009 Bill I know you are Jonesing a bit over your lost QdO Coronas so you may want to close your eyes. Thinking about these cigars I thought I would open a box and let some of you "mainstream" smokers see what HBill is talking about. Now if these cigars were 50 ring they surely would have been purchased long ago but considering that they are but lowly Coronas they were forgotten on a shelf for a person like me to discover. I have seen cigars looking much better than what I have here and I can't say that I am proud of the finish but the proof is in the smoking. These were likely passed over hundreds of times since '01 for a Hermosos #4 or a Robusto. Poor bastards did not know what they were missing but I am glad that they were passed over. I like to post pictures of cigars because like the rest of you I am proud of the collection of cigars that I have amassed. The fact is I don't own a bunch of pricey, special edition or 20 plus year old cigars and these a QdO's are a prime example of that; they are typical of what I own. I am a regular production cigar smoker but the fact is I smoke some damn good cigars day in and day out. These QdO Coronas are not special to many people... but they are to me and frankly they should be to more people because they are great ******* cigars! If you see a box sitting around at your local shop try to swing a deal and pick them up. You may be very glad that you did. Cheers, -Piggy

Cheers, -Piggy OMG you did NOT just do that piggy......LOL!..........they look beautiful to me! They definitely fall in that "overlooked under appreciated" category! I put some feelers out and trying to find any more boxs or even singles is quite difficult, but you never know. I certainly dont blame people for hanging to them! As piggy says, if anyone here runs across some, BUY THEM ON THE SPOT! Then treat them as a gold and savor them for special moments. Great pics, thanks piggy!
Headbanger Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Yes. Thank you Van. I missed getting the 2001's for too long I guess.
PigFish Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 They dropped the Claro from the box some time ago. I would have to refer to the book from the good doctor to find the date but my boxes are not marked Claro.
greenpimp Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Hey Bill! Long time no see. I have half a box of the QDO's, form 02 I think, and I really like them as well. Kind of a pleasant, powdery finish. Not overly mild and full of smooth flavor. Other "mild"-er recent production I would recommend are the ERDM Grandes de Espana and the PL Montecarlos. The ERDM are not really mild, but a wonderful smooth smoke wonderful with coffee. The PL Montecarlos are again not mild but smooth with that great Por Larranaga twang. I love them in the early afternoon while writing. All the JLO's I have from 06 onward, the #2 especially, I would classify as straight up full bodied (and full of nicotine too!.) Killer smokes, but no longer mild by any stretch of the imagination in my experience.
