Mike I think you will be disappointed if you enter into Cuban cigars with very fixed notions of flavours. The prime flavour of a quality cigar is quality toasted Cuban tobacco. From there you will find hints, nuances of other flavours evolving from the core. I am a lover of the Punch Petit Corona/Punch Super Seleccion No 1 and the Magnum 50 for some of the flavours you have detailed.

I'd also try the Cohiba Exquisito and Upmann Mag46. For me, those are the most consistenly recognizable espresso/coffee cigars. As for chocolately sweetness, give the Cohiba Maduro 5 line a spin. mikeman Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Alright, thank you guys for your help so far.Im sure most of you only smoke cubans, but has anybody ever had a Rocky Patel 1990 or Decade, anything like that?
Ginseng Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Alright, thank you guys for your help so far.Im sure most of you only smoke cubans, but has anybody ever had a Rocky Patel 1990 or Decade, anything like that? I've smoked maybe a dozen Rocky Patel products in my life. Honestly, I have not enjoyed a single one. The 1992 was horrible. The 1990 only slightly less so. And by the way, I smoke a good proportion of NCs. Maybe 25%. Those are mostly Tatuaje Brown Label, Cabaiguan, Ashton VSG, and a few AVO products. I will also admit to enjoying the occasional La Gloria Cubana Reserva Figurado, Serie R, and CAO Criollo. Wilkey

Yes...and the Padron Anniversario Serie 1964 Imperials and Torpedos and Davi Mills were once part of my regular rotation - but as our host here on this Forum and almost 100% of the members here concentrate on Habana cigars - the overwhelming majority of replies you will receive to questions will be vis-a-vis Cuban cigars - which is how I read your question as well. Weren't you looking for Habana cigar recommendations to fit a taste profile?
Ginseng Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Right on, Roman. And how could I forget the Padron 1964 (a sentimental favorite)? Wilkey
mikeman Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Yes,Sorry for being confusing. I am looking for a few cubans with the characteristics I mentioned earlier(chocolat/van/nutty/espresso/cedar). Im looking for something thats not to strong. Some of the cigars I am considering are: Punch Punch Montecristo #2 Partagas D serie 4 H. Upmann 46 Fonseca Cosacos
Colt45 Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 I can only concur with the advice already given. Don't be frustrated by what may seem a vague or indirect answer. If you go into it with an open mind regarding flavor profiles and cigar sizes, you will come out ahead in the end. An alternative to seeking out distinct profiles might be to find out what is currently approachable, and have a sampler put together. Enjoy the trip. P.S. If Cuban cigars tasted like your preferred NCs, why bother with Havanas - enjoy the differences.
Ginseng Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 P.S. If Cuban cigars tasted like your preferred NCs, why bother with Havanas - enjoy the differences. So true! Wilkey
mikeman Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 You guys are completely right!Never really thought of it that way. That being said,do you think that the cigars I listed above are a good place to start?Which are on the more medium bodies side?Once again, thank you for your help!
Colt45 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 That being said,do you think that the cigars I listed above are a good place to start? I don't have experience with very recent vintages of the cigars listed, but it's a start. I would normally suggest taking some time browsing the review forum, but during the switch over to the new forum format, the review forum became amalgamated with the general discussion forum. So the current review forum does not contain all the reviews available here, though if you do know specifically what you're looking for, you can do a search.
DocRKS Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I believe the only way to answer your question is for you -yourself- to try the sticks you listed. Just contact Rob or Lisa and ask them to put together a sampler of the cigars you're interested in. Here at CigarCzar, you can procure singles to try without the risk of getting an entire box that you find after a few cigars does not suit you. The best thing for you to do is to start smoking and be able to answer these questions for yourself.... Besides - it's a FUN project!
solid Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Alright, thank you guys for your help so far.Im sure most of you only smoke cubans, but has anybody ever had a Rocky Patel 1990 or Decade, anything like that? The Decade is probably the only cigar that I enjoyed from Rocky Patel. It was suprisingly complex with a myriad of flavors, each time I looked at the band I would think "this is a Rocky Patel?" It's a very enjoyable cigar, that should age well.

Lanthor Posted February 4, 2009 Posted February 4, 2009 I hear there is a 'best of 2008' sampler available that would also do away with your guess work.
