Romeo y Juliet: Cazadores

Let me start by saying the following to provide some back ground. I have been on the FOH site for some time now, and have shared my thoughts on many topics, but have never reviewed a Cigar before. I feel it takes a very good understanding and control of the pallets. I have not mastered this in any way, but will try my best to provide some input on the R&J Cazadores.

I invited my brother over who is also a member of the FOH site, and fishing partner to review the R&J Cazadores. Before starting down the path of smoking the cigar I made an effort to look up the company’s history just to get a feel of the history.

Quick history reviews provide the following details: I noticed the Cazadores were not listed in the site. This could be a bad sign for this cigar. (Prez can you find out if they are killing this release?)

Named after William Shakespeare’s tragic lovers, the origins of Romeo y Julieta as a Habano dates back to 1875.

The brand rose to international fame during the early years of the 20th Century under the direction of Don "Pepin" Fernandez, a talented promoter, who was amongst the first to recognize the power of the cigar band. During his hey day no less than 20,000 different bands were used in production.

This is the end of the history lesson on with the review.

We started the process by cooking some food outside; Cazadores is not a light cigar in any way. If the box is new they tend to be very strong.

As the Sun started to go down we changed clothes to get more relaxed, and determined it was time to get down to the review part of this process.

We pick an R&J Cazadores 2007 box with two years of aging.

Length: 162

Ring Gauge: 44

Construction: The Cazadores is not the most eye pleasing cigar I have seen; it holds all of the details and tries not to hide any imperfections. The Cazadores tends to be honest and straight forward. The wrapper tends to be oily, and very reflective to the eye making them more active. The aroma from the box held the hues of a leather belt, light hints of earth, light hints of coffee beans, and was very pleasant to the nose.

1st Draw & Flavors:

Before lighting the cigar after the cap was cut, I noticed a light pepper taste on my lips. I began the process by lighting the cigar, revealing an immediate rush of roasted almonds, leather, earth, and pepper. It was really hard at this point to determine details, but I knew I was in for a ride, and this cigar was not hiding its personality in any way. I had to step back for a few seconds to compose my thoughts. My brother also stated he felt the same way.

1st half of the Cigar

As we kept smoking the Cazadores we noticed after a few seconds that roasted almonds/light nutty, and hints of leather/earthy followed by very light pepper look to be the path this Cigar was taking. We also noticed the hint of floral dancing on our tongues after the fact. The floral was almost like a violet meets light metallic taste. This was new for me. My brother noted his Cigar had more of a leather/earthy driven flavor, and very light floral.

2nd half of the Cigar

On the second half of the Cigar we noticed that the almond/nutty flavor kind of became lighter, and the pepper became sweeter. There was also very light hints of coffee and leather. We noticed the Cigar had taken on a very floral turn and was becoming more than just hints, it was becoming a character of the cigar. I did notice that after some aging, this Cigar had a change in personality and look forward to next year smoking it again.

Other notes:

Burn: Nice & even.

Aroma: It is a very aromatic Cigar, and very pleasant.

Ash Quality: The ash was dark, and grey. Not a pretty ash!

Draw: The draw was very nice

Thank you for the nice review. I certainly have enjoyed the 07 Caz. I've found it's a cigar to take your time with.

Nice review (and pics) of a cigar I have smoked quite a few of.

It used to be my regular cigar for a friday evening or whenever I wanted something a little stronger from the island.

You didnt mention much about the burn so I assume it was fine. One of the problems I have with this one is the burn can be a real pain as the wrapper is thicker and sometimes it is hard to keep it going.

I love the size of this cigar and the price point.
