Just finished enjoying a 2003 Monte 2. Not sure if this has happened to anyone else but thought I might post it up there.

in last inch, wrapper became unstuck so I turfed it and kept smoking the cigar. (too good not to bin it). As soon as I pulled the wrapper off, what little ash I had fell off (not as a result of removing wrapper but sometime after.

Hence my question is: what impact does the wrapper have on stabilising ash? Thoughts?

I am sure there are other opinions, but I do not think most wrappers have much to do with form or shape of the cigar, or of establishing ash. I do believe the wrapper has more to do with overall flavor than your average smoker, but I doubt the outer wrapper does too much else.

Not having removed the wrapper before, so I'm only guessing here. Perhaps the wrapper keeps the filler together, thereby giving the ash a stable foothold? When you removed the wrapper, the filler spread apart a bit and loosened the ash.

I would think the wrapper/binder combination would be very important, forming an exoskeletal ash as it itself burned.

If you have had shaggy foot rolled cigars, you probably noticed the initial ash (before wrapper) is very unpredictable.

Long fillers are responsible for those bragging right ash lengths but without the wrapper/binder they would probably more resemble Phyllis Diller's hair and never hold long.

JMHO :buddies:

the "binder" keeps the filler together. :D
