Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo des Dieux

ARA NOV 01

We wrapped op our M-F week yesterday with a few bottles of wine and a handfull of des Dieux.

This has always been a favourite of mine so I thought it a good time to mellow out, put my feet up and catch up with Lise, Smithy and the local FOH crew.

Not the prettiest Caronas Grandes (6 1/8 inch x 42). Wrappers tend to be veiny and varied. This one was not bad, colorado colour, nicely rolled but nothing to right home about. The cigar equivalent of kissing your sister (....I mean't on the cheek just in case any of you were getting excited :lol2: ).

Lisa poured me a glass of Green Point Chardonnay while I torched the Dieux. The draw was spot on and before long the woody creaminess which I adore arrived in spades.

The Dieux was heavier in body than I expected ....a touch past mediu m which surprised me as I have always classified it as light - medium previously.

This was an hour of hedonistic delight. The flavour was consistent as was the body. The burn was a touch erratic toward the back third but my dropping it twice while laughing at Shagga Bowden's story's of youthfull exhuberance certainly didn't help.

For those of you who crave to find out what Davidoff Cubans tasted like but baulk at the dollars.....try a few Dieux as it reminds me so much of the great Davidoffs. Does anyone else share that opinion?

Nice review Rob. Never had one and no, not mooching one either. The Hoyo line always struck me as a little to mild for my palate, with exception being given an aged DC and Epi#2.

The Le Hoyo line always struck me as probably more mild than the rest of the line so I stayed away. If your opinion is medium body, then I might give it a go.

We'll see.

I also say the Hoya line is a milder smoke , but it has the zing that keeps you smokeing more of them.

By the way Pres.... How much do you smoke on average weekly?

When these are "on" they are a medium bodied, sweet, creamy smoke with deep toasty, spicy caramel and floral notes. I once likened it to a semisweet caramel mousse with a graham cracker stuck in the top. It's that rich. But it's not a mild or subtle cigar... it's got some strength of character. The best of the Le Hoyo vitolas, IMO. Incidentally, late '01 boxes are generally recognized as the best dates for this cigar.

I've always wanted to try a few of these, they sound right up my alley. I think I might spring for a box as a chrissy present to myself this year

Had one of these the other night Prez & have to say it was an absolute shocker.

Little to no flavour, draw so tight my cheeks were hurting & just a really ordinary smoke.

Probably one of the only bad sticks I've got from you Rob.

Had to pull out some rum & a Siglo VI to restore my mood

I have had many and enjoyed most. This is the cigar that exudes coccao flavor. Never had one with a bad draw. The only problem I have with this cigar is I smoked my last one a few weeks ago. So many cigars so few dollars.

i just smoked one of these last night...a 2001 (and my last one). I hadn't smoked one in a long time, and it was too bad that my last one was a let down. It was rolled waaayyy to tight, and so it was really hard to enjoy. The flavor was a bit off, with some surprising notes of tanicity.

Anyway, when these are on, they are ON. a great smoke to keep in the humi

Thanks Prez,

I know your picks have been spot-on other times, so I'll give another one a try. Just ordered a box of Monte#4 today, so maybe chuck it in with that.

Cheers mate.:ok:

Was recommended these the other day on the forum and tried the local shop to sample a stick but were sold out  Just makes me more curious...

Prez,

I tried the des Dieux you sent on the weekend, & what a difference. Great flavours (almost hints of strength & spice), but just an absolute delight. Perfect draw & burn, & smooth from start to the point where my fingers were burning. No better way to celebrate a weekend away in the Blue Mountains than a shiraz & cigar under the stars, with only the sounds of wildlife to serenade you.

Ah, the serenity.

Thanks Prez:ok:

I picked up a box of these from our # 1 Oz purveyor of the finest cigars - I have sort of stayed away from these in the past owing to their reputation of being a 'light weight' and very mild flavored stick. However, Rob's recommendation on these was a pretty strong one (I originally ordered another vitola which I was advised may not be everything I was hoping for and the des Dieux was suggested.)

I am very happy to confirm that this cigar is loaded with a beautiful, medium bodied, creamy and DELICIOUS flavor - certainly not the tasteless and extremely light bodied cigar that it has been reported as. I paired this cigar with a few drams of Highland Park 18 yr Single Malt recently and I settled into my favorite chair and reminded myself that taste experiences such as these are why we smoke these cigars and accompany them with adult beverage in the 1st place....

Very timely post. I have just received a handful of these to try in an order that I placed to capitalize on FOH's holiday free-shipping special.

I won't touch these until they have spent at least 30 days in my humidor. But I do look forward to trying them early next year.
