Ken Gargett Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 was fiddling in the 'dor earlier and noticed something bizarre. have all remaining punch super selection 2's in the one box - got them originally in cuba and split a cab with a mate. then a few extras from rob. whilst they are all identical in length, there is a noticable discrepancy in ring gauge. not the sort of thing that you might notice with a microscope but quite clear. anyone else come across this with either these or anything else? when i get time, i intend to do a taste comparison.
skid11 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Definately cigar beetle infestation eating longways from the centre foot to the tip. Pop all the smaller ring gauges in a plastic bag and send them to me immediatley. Just glad I can help mate..............
lfg2nrg Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Have you been fondling the fat ones a little to much?
El Presidente Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Ken, after personally opening approximately 30,000 boxes of cigars since 1997 I can say ...with some authority .....that variances of guage does exist ;-) What I have seen: 1. Differences in guage within a box 2. cigars laid upside down 3. Wrappers missing 4. Misprint on boxes 5. Different bands within a box Nothing surpises although quality contol since Altadis involvement has diminished dramatically. We still check every box :-D
JMH Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Ugh check out the huge chunk out of the Hoyo (DC?) in the foregorund. I've never really noticed any discrepancyin gauge, but then again I've never really bothered to look. A missing wrapper though... well I never would have guessed. If you don't mind my asking ken, what kind of humi setup do you run? Thanks
CIGARHead Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Ken. I have a Cab of Por Larranaga PCs that I am halfway through. Reached in the other day and there was a lonely fat one in there. Exact length, but was def. fatter. I chose it and was pleasantly surprised. I also thought after smoking it, that we should def. push for a PL corona gorda.

ironman Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Damn my stomach just turned seeing those cigars:-( Ironman
Freefallguy Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 » Have you been fondling the fat ones a little to much? I think it's most clear that size does indeed matter to Mr. Gargett!
Curmudgeon Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 » Now I have sent him on the right path, and he started out his new » collection with a few boxes of Opus x. Good cigars with which to test the new setup; it'll be no great loss if they're eaten by beetles! ;-)
Loki Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Just received a cab of partagas connoisseur #1 and upon inspection, after reading this thread, I did notice that 3-4 cigars were noticeably larger ringed than the others. I guess that this is one of those things that seems to be overlooked by most folks. Good catch.
Spud2 Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 I've noticed changes in ring size in the same box before, did not effect taste. Keep smoking! :-)
El Presidente Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 Bloody Hell Fella's. I had to disinfect the screen

dragon Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Good thread ken. I too have noticed significant size (ring guage) discrepancies with some of my cigars, and the most noticable seems to always be with the piramide size. For some reason, the Monte 2's with lighter color wrappers always seem to be a nice fat, full 52 ring guage or even a tad larger, while many other piramides always seem to be smaller around, and the difference is quite noticable when held foot to foot. Some of my P2s and VR Unicos just barely scrape the edges when pushed through my ring guage on the 50 hole. On the other hand, I've noticed that the churchill size always seems to be the most consistent from cigar to cigar, both in length and ring guage.
Mel Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 There are always some measure of girth variance in the totalmente a mano cigars. I have had most of my cigars come de-banded and then attempt to reapply the bands. I do not think there are two alike in a box. I just recieved a box of Cohiba Esplendido and Sig IV. The Espl. are supposed to be a 47 and the Sig IV a 46 ring gauge but I'll be damned if virtually all the Sig. IV are larger(fatter) than the Churchill Esplendido. I've seen the RASS vary quite a lot in girth. Length will be exact but not the guage. Hand made products are just that way.
Ken Gargett Posted November 6, 2005 Author Posted November 6, 2005 did you mean "increased dramatically"? » » Nothing surpises although quality contol since Altadis involvement has » diminished dramatically. » » We still check every box :-D
Guest cohiba Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 The sticks i have noticed the most difference was in the Cohiba Siglo 6. BIG difference from a tubo to a 10 count box to the 25 count box. Didnt change anything in taste, draw, pleasure.........just an observation.
cvm4 Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 I mainly noticed this on my P2's and Unicos I have. Just side by side comparision of the cigars in the box.
ilikecigars Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 my wife and i have a size discrepancy issue....i say 8" she says more like half that...wtf? those beetle pic.s are scary...my humi has gone up into the high 70's a couple times but no damages..guess ive been lucky.

This was just a month ago. Now I have sent him on the right path, and he started out his new collection with a few boxes of Opus x.
