Thanks for this interesting comparison, Rob.

Like many others who appreciate an aged Upmann, I have often wondered why this marca often seems to get "stronger", or at least more full-bodied, with the years. I got an ENE03 box of No. 2's from Lisa back in 2004 that has seemingly grown more powerful every year. One of the strongest cigars in my humidor, I can only enjoy one when I'm "in the mood".

Another great review..

I going to try another review soon, but I have been a little shy after my intro some time back. I love to read your reviews, and I must say those cigars look great.

Keep them coming............;-)

The following cigars were generously gifted by FOH’er Fred Dawkins….Thanks mate :ok:

It is nice to have the opportunity to do a tasting of two Piramides with a little age . Both cigars have been resting for a period of just over 70 days at 65% RH 65% Celsius.

Both cigars look flawless. Fred tells me the the faux banded one is the Cohiba Piramide 2001 LE and the unbanded the 98/99 Upmann Number 2.

Cohiba Piramide 2001 LE

Construction and wrapper are impressive. There are damp patches of oil on the wrapper. Before sampling the aroma you would swear it was a young cigar just due to the fact that in the hand it feels young …oily/moist wrapper…slightly over weighted in hand. Aroma at cold is rich Vuelta Abajo tobacco and leather.

Clipped the cap and found an almost perfect draw. Residual taste on the lips and tongue is great tobacco and dry grass.

Fired up the foot, body is medium. Very smooth on the senses. Slight bite through the nose. There are dry stalks on the palate and dark roasted south American coffee beans. Slight cocoa edge but I am not fining any hints of Cohiba or Limited Edition sweetness.

Into the second third the Cohiba is struggling to put forward a cohesive identity. I taste dry grass, some black coffee, but no element of sweetness. The Cohiba Piramide LE’s from 01 I have had in the past have been a mixed bag. In general I find them to have a herbal edge which doesn’t appeal to me personally and again I am finding it here. Surprisingly (after 6-7 years) the ash on the cigar has an irregular burn which needs to consistently be touched up.

I get the impression there is a lot more development to this cigar. The final third was a tad disappointing. It certainly held its flavour line but it did not develop to another level. Another 3 years of deep sleep should see if this cigar is going to turn into something special (Millenium Piramides or 06 LE Piramides) or whether it will join the line of failed Edicion Limitada’s.

86/100 4/6 smokerings.

H. Upmann Number 2 (98/99)

Another flawless looking cigar. Aroma at cold is a little punchier than the Cohiba. Very good level of oil on the wrapper and weight in the hand is perfect. Clipped the cap and found a slightly easy draw .Flavour on the lips is quite grassy. The Upmann took easily to flame and delivered an opening of roasted nuts, coffee and leather. This is a wonderful medium/medium full cigar which is burning with the authority of a purebred. The smoke emanating from the cigar is all fresh baked biscuits. Very very good cigar as it moves into the second third. There are so many subtle elements in this but the backbone is leather and it has surrounded itself with coffee/cream/shortbread.

This cigar cries out “Fine Scotch” The burn is razor sharp. The ash is dense. The flavour profile a mix of a great BBF and a Sir Winston.

I smoke quite a few younger Upmann 2’s and it is a rare occurrence that any deliver complexity in youth. If you purchase Upmann….lay it down as you will be rewarded in spades. This is perhaps more important with the Upmann Marque than any other (my opinion).

92/100 5/6 Smokerings.
