bgoodz Posted July 16, 2006 Posted July 16, 2006 Definately interested & would love to see pics. Thanks. Hey Trevor, here's the link if it doesn't work email me and I'll email you a direct link. Let me know if you would like the inventory list needed and you certainly don't need as much Spanish Cedar as I put in.......that's just me "overkill" ;-) http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/bgoodz/my_photos
Lorax429 Posted July 17, 2006 Posted July 17, 2006 I got myself a 24 bottle wine cooler with thermoelectric cooling from compactappliance.com. It's an EdgeStar and cost me a little over $200. It has been a dream come true. It has a fan built in already, and it keeps my cigars at a perfect 65/65%rh. I just used some beads in a couple dress boxes in the bottom of the unit. It has been 100% maintenance free for almost 4 months now. Be careful ordering these things online though. They don't handle shipping ell. I got lucky and received mine in one piece. I know a couple other guys who weren't as lucky. :-|

cigardawg Posted July 22, 2006 Posted July 22, 2006 I was not willing to drop the kind of change necessary for a temperature controlled unit, either. However, keeping the house at 70F is out of the question...my wife would turn blue. I'm not willing to make her miserable. So, we compromised. I keep all of the cigars in an upstairs room. Small room, maybe 12x12. I installed a window unit in the room for the warm season. Keeps the room at 70F all summer. When it cools down, I remove the window unit and spread out the cigars (around the house). Cost me a whole $85 and I have had no problems at all. Oh, and the electric bills are not high either.:-D
JMH Posted September 23, 2006 Author Posted September 23, 2006 » Hi JMH » » Was this $3,400 for a humidor available in Australia?? » » If so, can you supply details? » » Thanks, Trevor. Sorry trevor, must have missed this. Just stumbled across it seeing if I missed any updates on the czar cabinet. If I remember correctly I was talking about a very ballpark figure for a small avallo/staebell, just taking the price, converting it to AUD, adding GST/customs, shipping etc.
Trevor2118 Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Sorry trevor, must have missed this. Just stumbled across it seeing if I missed any updates on the czar cabinet. No problem. I too was wondering about the czar cabinet, but I did not want to disturbe El Pres, as I see from his San Cristobal Tasting Notes that he is "flat out"........really feel sorry for him ;-) :-D :-D
Trevor2118 Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 Just an update. I have purchased a small thermoelectric wine fridge to evaluate its use for cigars. This is for Australia as we can't get a decent temp/hum control humidor here. Got it new for $150 delivered on Ebay, 28 bottle - 70 litre. It is adjustable with the necessary tempreture range & (from what I have read) should maintain approx 65% RH. A compressor type will NOT do this. I have also puchased 1.8KG Silica Sand litter pearls to assist RH stability. Wife was very intrigued when they turned up as we don't have a cat. Did not seem to help when I said they were for my cigars. :-D I will do some max & min (temp & humidity) measurements, both top & bottom, without then with the pearls & post the results. If it works, I will line 2 sides with spanish cedar & replace steel shelfs with spanish cedar ones. If it works, I may do a large 270l fridge rather than a walk in humidor I had planned for 2007. It would be smaller, but cheaper and portable. The larger units do cool AND heat, and some have a rudimentary RH control but are $4000+, so thus the test with the small unit. For info.
Professor Twain Posted October 14, 2006 Posted October 14, 2006 I have been using a 30 bottle Haier wine fridge with Heartfelt Beads. Works like a charm. After doing this for a few months I would like to have nicer wooden shelves instead of the curved metal ones, but I don't think that there is a need to line it in cedar. Once you fill it with cabinets there is tons of cedar anyway. The smell is great when you open it up. Plus you could have condensation problems if your lining is along the side, I have been cautioned not to let my boxes touch the sides for this reason. The ultra large size sounds like an outstanding idea.

This is good feedback regarding the cedar....I thought these were arranged to only condensate on the rear wall, but just replacing the (curved) steel shelfs with cedar should suffice. Can arrange a lip to maintain the air flow. Then, as you say, fill it with cabs. Just got a new credit card , should be fun.
Deano Posted October 15, 2006 Posted October 15, 2006 Mine stays in the basement. Never gets above 70 degrees.

Well, I got stumped at the first hurdle.......The thermostat does not work...unit maintains 12 deg C when set on min or max. Currently trying to get a refund but dealer does not seem to considered a non-functing thermostat a fault.......I should have "adjusted it with a hammer first", as they would refund "dead on arrival" Don't you just love eBay

What brand is it? I have an Avanti 28 bottle en route, as we speak.

Professor Twain Posted October 30, 2006 Posted October 30, 2006 Sorry to hear about your troubles with the Ebay purchase. I have always had great experiences with Ebay but this type of item is really heavy for them to pay for return shipping so they are going to try to put you off. I would let them know that if they don't make this right, that you will post negative feedback on them on the Ebay site. Sellers hate negative feedback because it deters buyers. This may get them to pay more serious attention to your problem. If you don't get satisfaction and do have to post negative feedback make it very specific and make it clear that they shipped you damaged goods and would not make things right. If this was a new item you may have some mode of complaint within Ebay, although I have no experience with doing this. Good luck.

If you did, I have extensive negative experience with them. I returned two units that had been damaged in shipping. I spent A LOT of time on the phone with them and was eventually able to get a full refund. They wanted to keep sending replacements, but after almost 3 months and two shipments back and forth they let me off the hook.

No, was oz-auction, but is apparently run by Compact Appliance's twin brother. I am getting somewhere now. They will accept a return but wanted me to pay the return freight. I countered with an email along the lines of Professor Twain's post & they are now paying freight for return & replacement. Lets hope I don't get the same unit back.:-D Thanks, Trevor.
