maui Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 I live in a moderate climate so the temp and my aristicrat is in the basement so the temperature stays in the low 70's all the time:-)
First Lady Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 Now that we have a new home and space I am sure that Rob can move on this ........I think he actually spoke to the gentleman when he was in China, he may have news when he gets back (that's if any work got done TFL » A while back, our host talked about creating an FOH humidor/wine fridge. » There's been no word for a while.
JMH Posted October 21, 2005 Author Posted October 21, 2005 Thanks jay. I'd be very interested in whatever information you come up with - it seems like we're following a very similar route. What sort of price are you talking about for the wine cabinet?
JMH Posted October 21, 2005 Author Posted October 21, 2005 » Haier now makes a wine cabinet that is temperature and humidity controlled. » There is a 40 and 50something bottle model in their afficionado series. I » havent seen them around yet, but they might be worth checking out. I think » the 40 bottle model is around 400 dollars. I just checked that out, and it seems really interesting. I couldn't however, find out what the humidity range on it was. The best price I could find was around $590 for one with a 37 bottle capacity.

Also, I could not find one on the net that would ship to or based in AU.
jwrussell Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 » Got the same problem. Since I am living in an apartment, so it is a » nightmare. » » Going to get a Wine Storage Cabinet and converting it to a Cigar Cab » instead. Cheaper than the $3400 Humidor. Doing exactly this within the next couple of weeks.
Echeck Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 The upper temp range on the haier's can be adjusted to 60-65 degrees. The website doesnt quite list the humidity adjustment levels. Wine you would want to keep around 70 degree humidity anyway. I figure that is where the level might be set at. I havent been able to find the unit locally, my info is from their website. I currently have a 42 bottle haier that I converted to a humidor. It works quite well with some climax beads and a fan. But it does require some upkeep. It is not as easy as a set and forget system.
El Presidente Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Gentlemen, Deep freeze all your cigars (as discussed on another thread) and Temp control does not become a problem. Jay, I will have some information on Temp Control Cabinets Shortly ;-)

I would be interested on any information you have.
jay8354 Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 El Prez, On another note, I have noticed that in an older posts that CZ was going to introduce a range of Wine / Cigar Cabinets. Is that still going ahead? If so, when will the final product be available. Thanks.
El Presidente Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 Met with the factory in China. We have the designs but the hiccup is that when you introduce an "active" humidification system (adds and removes) the price triples. We are in the business to build an affordable unit for the average punter. We have no intention of competeing with with Bob Staebel and the other guys who are doing excellent work. We believe we have worked out a solution with the factory and are awaiting a prototype. This is a 2006 launch project so if we can have it ready to fly by our return from Havana March I will be happy.
jay8354 Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 JMH, maybe we should hold off the wine fridge conversion till El Prez has the FOH Cab in production. I am all for someone to produces a useful product then me building something that maybe functional. :-P
hazleem Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 Guess I'll hold off till March before investing in a temp controlled humi. When you live in the tropics, it is much more challenging to keep the temperature down to a decent level and having the A/C on all day is just going to kill my wallet! Just read the tread about bug infestation and I'm horrified for my babies! Deep freezing, seems to be the most reliable method... need to learn more :-| -Haz-
ALB Posted October 30, 2005 Posted October 30, 2005 JMH, Just sent an email to Jay re: building a cab. Guy at work (D&T department at school) has offered to build one for me, & as soon as I decide on thermoreg. it will be all go. If .all goes well I will post the finished product on the board & pass on details for construction. Will let you know on progress.

Awesome thanks. From what I've heard though, once you've bought all the timber and components, it doesn't end up being any cheaper than one made by the larger companies. Though I guess if you're using school wood... ;-) Jay, Im really interested to see how the czar fridge will turn out too *fingers crossed* :-P btw, what school do you work at? Like

If it's too expensive will wait & see what El Prez is cooking up for the FOH fridge.
jay8354 Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Thanks ALB. Got your msg. The problem I had with building your own Cab is trying to get a Electric Humidifier that is cost effective. Let me know how it all turns out. BTW, How did you manage to get hold of Spanish Cedar?
ilikecigars Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 ill be moving north a 165 miles soon...hope this will keep my cigars cooler...oh, and of course the centrai a/c helps a bit too.

Hi Jay8354. -Did you get any replies on availability of spanish cedar? -Have you found any humidification / cooling system available in Australia (irrespective of price)? Thanks, Trevor.
Trevor2118 Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 >>At the moment, I have other things I'd rather spend ~$3400 on than a humidor. Hi JMH Was this $3,400 for a humidor available in Australia?? If so, can you supply details? Thanks, Trevor.
hueynova Posted July 14, 2006 Posted July 14, 2006 » ill be moving north a 165 miles soon...hope this will keep my cigars » cooler...oh, and of course the centrai a/c helps a bit too. You guys hit on something that has been worrying me a lot of late; my house often skyrockets during the day, especially now that we are having a warm summer. Quick to take advice from my fellow FOH's, (see above references to thermoelectric wine coolers) I've just purchased a small, 16 bottle wine cooler for 99 bucks! (www.vintagecellars.com). Will keep you all posted regarding effectiveness/controllability in a few weeks. PS to iLike: I used to live in the Albany area... can be very hot and humind in summer time! But its a beautiful area.
DrAlejandro Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 to be honest with you I think the best solution for temperature controled storage is a wine cooler if cash is a big consideration... get a nice one and it should be a fraction of the cost and work just as well, only downside I see is that it doesnt look as good but oh well
bgoodz Posted July 15, 2006 Posted July 15, 2006 Living on the Central West Coast it usually doesn't get that hot however the temp does spike up in the summer and I'm faced with similar problems. I built a coolerdor fully lined with Spanish Cedar and keep it in a hallway closet. It stays a few degrees (2 to 3 deg)cooler than the desktop humidors (at the extreme 71deg). I now have the desktop humidors in there as well but the coolerdor still runs cooler. If anyone is interested in building one let me know and I'll post pics and send a materials list to you. I would love to have a THC Aristocrat but the coolerdor was more economical for me at the time. I will be looking forward to what Rob comes up with.
