This pretty much describes how my January 07 Bolivar CJ's were tasting at the 1 year mark. Luckily, they've improved a lot in the last few months.

Nice review Prez. While I've not had the chance to smoke any 07's the boxes of 04's and 05's I've had have displayed everything from black cherry to a dank earthiness and when I say dank I mean you were walking through a forest and grabbed a handful of mushroom infused dirt and stuck it in your mouth. Truly unique but it's what I've come to equate that Bolivar earthiness characteristic that everyone talks about. One of my favs. :-D

Bolivar Corona Junior TEB JUN 07

Good looking little cigar with a darkish wrapper which felt a little wet to the touch. Actualy the cigar felt firm and I began to have doubts about its ability to draw . Aroma at cold was funky, backwater brackish swamp. Clipped the cap and the draw was on the firm side but not as bad as feared. A small massage and it improved again. Doable. Flavour at cold is sweet tobacco.

Fired up the foot and was met by a frontal assault of power…black charred wet wood, black pepper, tobacco. It was strong both on the palate, and biting through the nose. The smoke (plentiful) was acrid.

It took a full 10 minutes to settle down and reign in the power to resemble something with poise. Dark flavours….peppers…toasted tobacco…bitter cooking chocolate. Still medium full but mellowing ever so slowly. For every ounce of power it gives up it appears to develop an ounce more complexity.

All was going well until just past the midpoint. At its best I had lovely bitter cooking chocolate and toasted tobacco flavours in a medium full profile. However just past the midpoint all S##t hit the fam and burning cedar, coal, oil, bitterness washed over the cigar and it never recovered.

This may one day be a very good cigar. At one point I was wondering if the tobacco had not been fermented properly. I went back and looked at others from the same box and while certainly moist to the touch there is no obvious amonia smell.

This is just a young cigar overly moist. I should have dry boxed it for close to a week. It needs at least 3 years to develop qualities I think it posesses.

85/100 * with potential.
