Colt45 Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Not that you don't call things as you see them, but I almost get the feeling that you are looking for good things to say about this line :-)

aavkk Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hey Colt, i dont have much experience with Piedras but the man said he does have his limits. I'd hate to see him depressed and taking it out on Lisa.

El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 Cuaba Distinguidos OEB DIC 06 Large format Figurado which was perfectly rolled albeit a small wrapper split just above the band. Minimal aroma at cold. Lovely tan wrapper with some oil. Clipped the cap and the draw was perfect. I struggle to get any pre light flavours from the larger Cuaba's. At best it is pasture and tobacco. Gently lit the bulbous foot ....it is like lighting the wick on a stick of TNT....sort of..... except there wasn't any !KABOOM! to this opening. The Distinguido opened in a slow reserved manner. Certainly not flavourless ...but restrained delivery of light toasted tobacco, lightly toasted bread and just the hint of brown sugar. Mild bodied and appearing to be working quite happily within its range. While I am thrilled the Distinguido was happy with itself I need a little more oomp in the mid section to bring this cigar to Medium body. This is too large a format to bore someone senseless for the best part of 90 minutes. While I appreciate the subtleties....I have my limits. The opening gambit lasted until the just past the bulb and the Distinguido found a spine based around coffee/cake. We are certainly not talking about rich Gateaux but a light undressed sponge or tea cake. There is now a stronger influence of toasted tobacco and one could sense the body of the cigar building to true medium which was a welcome relief. There is now a density on the palate which was previously missing. I like this feeling...I don't appreciate a whispy cigar with no weight on the senses. Into the final third and I certainly classify this cigar as "good" with some anticipated upside over the next few years. The sweet edge has returned after being absent since the opening inch. Reading Kingantz review of an 05 example [link=http://www.friendsofhabanos.com/board_entry.php?id=79296&page=0&category=all&order=last_answer&descasc=DESC] Link[/link] I can visualise how this cigar will morph into what he has described. I am certainly not getting the depth of flavour he achieved but it may be just an issue of a 12 month difference. Certainly the cores of both cigars are similar. In the end this is a good cigar. It is an 86 cigar. It has a future but I am not sure it is a future I would wish to invest in. Then again as a 10 box it is not a huge financial gamble with some upside as long as you are patient enough to wait 3-5 years. It will be interesting to find out and I have put a few aside.
