dragon Posted October 11, 2005 Author Posted October 11, 2005 <<< THANK YOU BRAD PITT!! >>> Good one Ken! :lol2: I'd say Barbeque Pitt is more like it.
Bill Hayes Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 No seals in QLD. The water's too warm. You'll find them down south where I'm from in Victoria. They make a great food source for Great White Sharks. There's a seal colony off Phillip Island where I surf. A while ago the heaviest Great White was caught there. 22 foot long and almost as deep. That's the same size as a six birth caravan. :-D

Ken Gargett Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 mid 70's, was fishing on the outer edge of the swains (one of the reefs that are part of the great barrier, for non-aussies, about 200 k's offshore) and we were cleaning fish and toss frames overboard. looked over and the biggest thing i have ever seen - a hammerhead. we measured it against the boat - somewhere between 25 and 30 feet. frighteningly massive. bill, have seen photos of the great white you mention and it was, to my memory, 'fatter' and probably heavier but don't want to be in the water when either are around. » No seals in QLD. Only ever seen one in port phillip bay which was about 12 foot.
Smokin_Safari Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 Houseboating / fishing around Hinchenbrook Island early last year, we managed to hook what looked like a large log on a troll line, kicking up spray everywhere about 150m back. However as it seemed to approach the boat at speed (twice ours), we got worried & cut the line. Minutes later, a tiger shark at least 6m long passed us (on the surface!) - absolutely frightening, as not an hour before we had spent the day in an overloaded dinghy casting for barra. Everyone has forgotten about the baby-stealing dingos of the desert, or the white tailed spider whose bite rots your flesh.
Ken Gargett Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 had a response from seaworld - they believe it was part of a 'feeding response'. blacktips, which these were not, do it a lot (and the great whites in south africa). apparently others do it on accasion. suspicion is that they were chasing something like tuna and just shoot thru and on out. » » i wondered if they were doing the same thing with tuna (or possibly » big » mackeral or mack tuna) but i hadn't heard of it before. » » Quite possible indeed. I think the term most often used is "breaching"
El Presidente Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Thanks Ken Great to hear that Sea World called you back. Get concerned if they invite you in for a chat.
wasch_24 Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 That spider looks very similar to a black widow spider.

dragon Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 In all fairness, we DO have biting flies where I live, and they can be quite annoying to say the least.
El Presidente Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Biting Files!!! That's it, I'm cancelling the next trip to the RTDA
strayvector Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 » Biting Files!!! That's it, I'm cancelling the next trip to the RTDA  Don't forget...here in the US we also have ants and mosquitos too. They also bite...or sting. So be careful...:-D

I think thats why I have my reservations flying to OZ. Reasons to visit OZ: But I've got two brothers in Sydney, several cousins in Syd and the Gold Coast. And now visiting both El Prez/Lisa and a good friend from another board...in Brisbane The great wines and quality-tops steaks that are inexpensive. Last time I visited, I was single...and enjoyed the Cross.

Ken Gargett Posted November 15, 2008 Posted November 15, 2008 they are pretty close to deadly. those that have been stung swear that nothing has ever been so painful. driving along the beach at fraser years ago, saw a lump on the sand and we went back and sure enough, one had been washed up (for someone who fishes barfoot, it is a bit scary). it was huge and went into formalin for some display. it was still alive when we found it. the thing about these creatures - possibly the ugliest things on the planet - is that they have incredible eyes. seriously. look into them. they go forever. amazing. » Check out this ugly stonefish. If the stingers don't get you be careful not » to stand on this as it has long sharp painful barbs on it back. » » They are not deadly I believe but would put you in hospital quick » smart.:-( » »
