La Gloria Cubana Medaille D\'Or No.2 OSU MAR 02

Recommended Posts

Construction: Firm, felt very good in the hand, nice bunch at the foot.

Wrapper: Medium colorado. A bit veiny, a bit bumpy. Slightly leathery to the touch with just a hint of sheen.

Pre light draw / aroma: perfumed aroma with some rose petal. Draw slightly on the firm side with a light taste

of cocoa.

Draw: just on the firm side of perfect, with great smoke volume and a very straight burn

Taste: First half was a very nice combination of light sweet tobacco, tangerine citrus, cotton candy sugar,

and dried milk chocolate. Body was deceptive - the flavors were soft, round, smooth and balanced, though

easily detected. But the mouthfeel was fairly dense and coating, making this nicely medium in body.

Just past the halfway point, the core flavors remain, but the sweet tobacco becomes more earthy and deep,

with black pepper showing itself. Now moving past mid body, but not quite full.

With a third to go, the earthy tobacco and black pepper assert themselves, and it goes straight to full

bodied, but not harsh nor bitter.

Overall, this was quite the unexpected treat - 93. This was my first sample of this cigar, and as such does

not a complete picture make, but I truly enjoyed it.

Offbeat editorial comments: While smoking this one, I couldn't help but feel I had the little devil on

one shoulder - "I hate this cigar - it is pig vomit and dog excrement shaped into a cigar"

The little angel on the other "I love this cigar - it's a hidden gem"

Flicked the devil off and poured the angel a rum.

Awesome review, Ross. I have some of these with the exact same box code that I've been dying to smoke once I'm over this cold for good.

So, did that "devil" look and sound like Rob? What's the quote? Be right back . . . ah yes, [link=http://www.cigar-czar.com/store/cart.php?target=product&product_id=3566&category_id=741]"fermenting pile of puke."[/link] that's it. :-)

And are you on a GCB run, or are you starting a dalias run? Would love to see you compare this stick to a Party 898 or Siglo V or Boli Inmensa . . .

Far be it from me to cast aspersions on our beloved Captain Sparrow, but if the goat horns fit......

» And are you on a GCB run, or are you starting a dalias run?

After the excellent No.1, and as a lover of the Dalias, I thought I'd give these a shot.

» The Med. No. 2 is a favorite of mine.

Yes, thanks for steering me toward this one

» Great review . Havent tried a #2 but the DEC 00 #1's I have are mighty

» good. These seem to be real sleepers.

Thanks for the review - I just recently smoked through a box of '02 and thought they were great - hence the reason the whole box was unmercifully burned.....Could not help myself

A quick follow up.....

Smoked another of these today - this one suffered the Ayala curse. Green - not the sharp herbal green

of youth, but a musty grass. It tasted as a pile of wet leaves smells. To add insult to injusry, it did

not want to stay lit. It got the pitch less than a third in.

I tried to assuage my palate with a Partagas SdC3, but alas, the damage was done. Like opening a second

bottle of wine after taking a full swallow of one suffereing a severe case of VA taint.

At least the Black Seal and cola was good.

Thanks, RA.

:lol2: Leave it to Rob to give off the bad cigar omen. Ross, if you like Black Seal, try it with Barritt's Ginger Beer for a Dark n Stormy. Its very gooooood.

That's more like the Medaille D'Or No 2 I know :rotfl:

Not to re-hash old news, but I smoked my last single. A sweet, citrus tinged lovely.

For the members who bought these up, or already had '02s, I have what may seem an odd request.

When next you go to smoke one of these, if possible, see if you have one that feels comparatively

heavy / more densely packed, smoke that one, and post your thoughts.

Not really a theory, but a curiosity - thanks.

I'll do so Ross. I have an 02 box that i've been smoking and got one of the 02 boxes that Rob had. I'll wait a few more days and smoke one from the newly received box and report back.

Thanks, Austin. I'm sure it doesn't mean much, but the second "pond mung" sample

was relatively heavy compared to samples one and three.

Ross..

Here is what I did. I smoked a "regluar" heft LGC Med. 2, and one that was noticeably heavier.

There were 2 main differences between the two cigars smoked. The "regular" weight cigar was very sweet and the draw, to me, was perfect.

The heavier cigar didn't have as pronounced sweetness and was a bit togher draw...aceptable, but a bit more work involved.

Both cigars were excellent though. Each had the citrusy, floral notes. The only real flavor difference to me was the sweetness in the regular weight cigar - and lack of it in the heavier cigar.

Austin, thanks for taking the time and cigars! I didn't expect much much of a difference, but

I find it interesting none the less.

Really interesting experiment, thanks for sharing Austin.
