They also use cast off port or sherry barrels correct? If the bourbon or port is what mellows the white lightning, it works for me. I find that if I just put a splash of water in the scotch it opens up all kinds of aromas and fruity stuff like that LOL, but it's hard for me to smoke and drink as the alcohol overpowers my palate. Probably just me being a wimp, but....

As long as it tastes good! Of course I'm an equal opportunity drinker. Bourbon, Scotch, Rum, Port. They're all good!

Bought a bottle of the Glenfiddich Sherry Finish and was not at all impressed. Now the Glendfiddich Havana Reserve, aged in rum barrels, is another story. Outstanding.

I need to pick just 3, all of my favs have already been mentioned. Hard to dislike any single malt with 18+ years on it.

If you can get bourbon where you are, you really should give some a try. Anything at or above 101 proof from Wild Turkey is worth trying. Ernie gave you some good suggestions, as did the gentleman who suggested anything with the Van Winkle label.

If you really want to continue this nonsense with scotch (;-)), I'd recommend Laphroaig Cask 10 or Laphroaig quarter cask.

Finally, someone who understands what Bourbon is about.. :-)

I love the Wild Turkey Single Barrel 151 proof, need to get some more from the same barrel.

Dalwhinnie kicks ass too. Anything from the highlands has a little stronger touch to it.

I dont knock the Bourbon boys but everyone has their favourite Poisons. After a bad party when I was 17 I cant look at bourbon, so I turned to Scotch. But each to your own. It is really only nice with Coke!

El Prez,

Most scotch with a "Geln" in it is good.

Johnny Walker Blue label is pretty fantastic

Glenmorangie is my personal favourite.

I dont defame real Scotch with Coke. Just if I am looking for a quick drink. Sometimes I dont always feel like a Neat scotch. Usually is Scotch and Dry but if I am in need of a light drink then it is Johnie Red & Coke. But never the good stuff. I was at the Casino last week and saw a guy ask for a Cognac & Coke!!!!!!! I almost fell off my chair. The girl behind the bar looked confused. I asked for a cognac when I was there last and had to show the barmaid where the cognac was, and what glass to put it in. she had to ask three staff for the code to enter in the till. I am guessing Cognac isnt a big one on the lower floors in the casino. I imagine the High Rollers room has a large stash, but I will never see that one, we will ask Rob about that.

I'm dirt poor next to ya'll and a cheap drunk at that too. So here's my tops of

what I have drank:

Glenlivet 18yr - mentioned earlier and a nice one at that.

Jameson - My regular whiskey. Inexpensive and tasty.

Bushmill's Millenium Single Barrel - Expensive **** here, but worth every penny.

Laphroig is my absolute favorite. It took me several tastings to get into but now I'm hooked. I have only had the 10yr but I hear the 15, and the quarter cask are even better.

For speysides I just found a nifty one called balvenie doublewood. Its aged 12 years, the last in a sherry cask. Its good stuff.

I have always like abelour, which I still do. But these two opened my eyes.

I like JW Black Label a lot, but right now I'm more of a bourbon drinker. But I really should get some nice scotch... :-|

What a coinincidence. Last night I looked in the very bare spirits cupboard at home looking for something different and saw the Johnny Walker Black Label bottle that some friends of ours left with us before they went back to NZ. I am not a spirits drinker as such and thought this stuff might be OK with some soda water. Have to say it wasn't bad. Should have lit up a cigar 'cause I think the stuff it may be made for it...will probably finish off the bottle tonight!

I was a 'late bloomer' to the scotch scene, but like most things I do, I attacked it with a vengence. I love the non-peaty scotches that are aged in sherry or oak the best. But then I found single-barrel single malt scotches and lost all sense of reality. The description that I have seen on these rival that of most wines the the flavors that come out are incredible. Then there is the ritual of adding small amounts of water and tasting the difference as the scotch is watered down. I had a Glenfarclas scotch (SBSM) that was the real proof of this and we used it as a training scotch. Every addition of water changed the flavor of the scotch noticeably, even for the novice scotch drinker. These are definitely sipping scotches, though, and if you are going to mix them with anything other than water, it is a waste. Most are about 130 proof, so you HAVE to water them down, although I always first try them neat. Only a few have been smooth enough that my throat wasn't fried by the alcohol. There was even one that had a pronounced strawberry flavor - I finished that one the other day and am sorry that I cannot get any more. There is a commercially availabe pseudo single-barrel single malt scotch, Aberlour a'bundah, that is a good one to try. It sells for about $65 US. The other ones run from $95-$300 a bottle. I bought a $325 34 year old SBSM (Glenfarclas) specifically to share with our Cigar Club so that we could all sample it. I also saved some for one of our member's son, since it was older than him. I killed that off this last weekend - YUM!

» El Prez,

» Just got back from a month overseas. I was in Scotland at the end of my

» Trip. If you can find any in Oz, I recomend a Single Malt by the

» distillery of Talisker. It is from the Isle of Skye, and is almost a

» Cognac of a whiskey, I drank copious amounts of it whilst I was there.

» Also Laproaig (Check Spelling) that was a nice Single Malt. I am also

» Ross...

Yup Ross, Talisker is my ALL-TIME favorite Scotch. It has a slight peatiness that compliments cigars REALLY well.
