been having discussions with various mates re the quality of these two reels (a few of us are off to christmas island for bones and may be even a GT). we are talking for 8 and 12 weight rods.

there is a school of thought that says sage reels are not as good as their rods.

anyone any thoughts as to which is best. certainly the abel is a fair bit more exy.

Ken...you would be better contacting the guide in Christmas Island and find out what he prefers casting with.

has anyone else ever wondered why, with all the fishing photos on this forum, there is not one single shot of rob with a fish? in all the years i have fished with rob (okay, not that many but enough), i have never seen him actually catch one. seriously. not one. it is always 'they were on just before you arrived or just after', 'i just let one go before you walked around the bend' and on and on.

i have seen rob sit at the bottom of his skiff for four hours while his guide repaired the bird's nest of line from his attempts to cast.

and i will happily take any lie detector test, swear on any publication, religious or otherwise etc etc, that not once, ever, on any occasion, has a guide cast for me to catch fish. not once. not a single bone or trout has ever, ever been caught by me in this way.

rob, perhaps you had better start getting your guide to cast for you. it might help.

Ken....I simply suggested you contact the guides where you are going fishing and see what they use?

I was in no way suggesting any thing else? I am deeply hurt you would think otherwise.

» I'm no authority, but I'd have a look at tibor as well.

If you want the best reels, start with Tibor, then move to Abel. They are both extremely similar in design and quality. I use Tibor.
