Guest Robusto 107 Posted December 8, 2007 Posted December 8, 2007 Many people said this is a sweet cigar but I don;t think so. I have an JNL May 04 50 Cab. This taste is very good, medium body with bean, woody, taste, but no sweetness at all, and even sometimes a little bit bitter. Any comment on this? Thanks, Rob 107

I guess there're several reasons you feel differently. 1,Difference on storing. 2,met bad blending (I also today felt it with CoRo) 3,Change the taste by aging.

I find the sweetness can come from a citrus note. I don't come across it often in the ERDMCS. Bitterness is not an element I normally find with examples more than a few years old. They are quite a remarkable cigar when all the stars are aligned.

Hello I have smoked some sampler before from Dress box, same case with bitterness. Maybe I am too lucky to come across a bitter CS. The overall taste is great, but if the bitterness gone, it will be perfect. Thanks a lot for your advice. Have a nice weekend Rob107

El Presidente Posted November 15, 2008 Author Posted November 15, 2008 El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme Jun 07 Always a robusto which floats under the radar although I know that it is a firm favourite with many here. In the world of Habanos Robusto sales the El Rey Del Mundo Choix Supreme tails the field just ahead of the Saint Luis Rey Regio. Both excellent cigars when "on" and recent 07 and 06 examples have been very good to stellar. At its best the ERDMCS is a light medium bodied cigar with creamy coffee tobacco charachters. There can often be some sweet elements but it is not the norm. I often find buttery charachteristics in the cigar and sometimes my expectation of the cigar are blown away with a Medium full profile. This does not happen that often (some 06's and early 07's have this fuller body) and it is not really what I would consider to be a quintessential element of the cigar. This example is from an open box of June 07 ERDMCS in the humidor. Pretty but not stunning is has a good element of oil in the supple wrapper but rather an untidy wrapper roll. The cap is perfect as is roll. Slight sweet spice and tobacco aroma at cold (nutmeg?). Clipped the cap and the draw was spot on providing a perfect level of resistance. The only distinct flavour on the lips was pure toasted tobacco with not an amonia greeness to be found. I swear this cigar is two to three years old. I gently torched the foot (never direct flame) and a caramel sweet aroma wafted through the air. Unfortunately the initial draws did not replicate the sweetness but rather a medium bodied subdued opening of good tobacco, peat and hopps. Into the first inch and the cigar reminded me very much of a microbrew....toasted tobacco, peat, barley and hopps. I wouldn't say it was an enthralling opening performance and perhaps the leaning toward cereal/vegatal charachters was an element of youth (actually quite likely) but it was making a statement in a medium bodied way that was neither unpleasant nor mind shattering. I wasn't counting on many changes in the second third but I was pleased to see the arrival of some buttery nuances which added a depth of flavour previously missing. I think I have described it before but add a knob of butter to a some sautéeing mushrooms and bacon and you have a transformation. The butter binds, thickens and intensifies the flavours. Well in this case the same occured. What was initially rather disparate flavours of Tobacco, peat, barley/ hopps .....all there but not working together...were quite quickly combined to produce a thicker more satisfying flavour. The strength of the cigar did not increase but the weight on the palate certainly did as did the cigars viscosity. Thicker on the tongue, lusher, velvet like. Unfortunately just before the band a woodiness arrived which took away the buttery elements and we were back again to a good cigar...just not great. I could call it complexity but the woodinees dd not add any pleasure to the experience but rather took it away. It was not long before the princes of darkness arrived (bitterness/tannin) and I struggled with the rest. Overall a good cigar. In some parts great but not quite convincing. I think I might be being overly harsh on a June 07 cigar so I will give it a 2 point break on youth and potential. I do believe it has the elements of a very good ERDMCS but I somehow suspect it does not have the sheer quality to be a great. Time will tell. 87/100 4/6 Smokerings.
