Cuban Dr Says Fidel Castro's Recovery Is Slow But Sure-AFP

MANAGUA (AFP)--One of Cuba's top physicians said Cuban leader Fidel Castro was recovering slowly from gastrointestinal surgery last year and was "in very good shape," although his doctors still recommend that he take it easy.

"He has a problem with bleeding in the digestive system that got complicated and slowed down his recovery, but I find him in very good shape," Rodrigo Alvarez told El Nuevo Diario newspaper in an interview during a visit here.

He said Castro's personal physicians have recommended that "he take it easy, because it is better to keep Fidel thinking instead of running about, since he's 81 years old."

Alvarez, Cuba's top orthopedic surgeon and director of the International Medical Complex, denied reports that Fidel Castro had cancer, which he said had originated from Washington.

He also defended Raul Castro, who has served as interim Cuban president since his brother underwent surgery in July 2006, from criticism that he got the appointment merely because of his relation to Fidel.

"He earned his position through a lifetime of struggle," said Alvarez, who at one point was a personal physician to the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

Fidel Castro has not been seen in public since his operation, but has published weekly commentaries in Cuba's official newspapers. On October 14, he called in during Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez' weekly television chat program.

It was the first live audio appearance of the aging leader in 15 months. Photographs were also shown of Fidel and Chavez during the talk show.

"... Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. I have not much hope that Gollum can be cured before he dies, but there is a chance of it... My heart tells me that he has some part to play yet, for good or ill, before the end..."
