Funny you mention that. If you look at our western democracies, there is not much of a choice and very few people have made a difference. You have the illusion that you have a choice, but in reality, you dont.

Nearly 43 percent cited low wages and high prices as the country's biggest problem, with the "lack of freedoms" a distant second at 18.2 percent. Just 4.8 percent named the U.S. trade embargo as the country's biggest problem.

When you struggle to feed yourself and your family without resorting to bribe, graft or theft...."a lack of freedoms" is understandably not your prime concern.

Maslows Heirachy of needs comes to mind.
