seriously, now that JK Rowling has finished harry potter, you could take over. some of the best fiction i've seen since i last listened to a pollie.

re the cigar, for me, very similar to the first but i thought marginally better. pretty much what rob said (the fact that he has five big cigars a day and starts on the rum at 11 might mean he has to ingest tar from roadworks to get a hint of flavour). the first inch, inch and a hlaf again very strong but again it settled down then and this was the most enjoyable part of the cigar. that said, unlike the first, that flavour profile was maintained rather than the descent to overwhelming that plagued the first one. so yes, powerful, though not quite to the same extent as the first. very much a long termer, and i must say that i'd be inclined, if well priced, to put a box away but i would not be touching them for 8 to 10.

the wines? separate post coming up.

just so i understand, this would be the lisa who was not there and the lisa whom you pay her wages et al?

not even perry mason could get that to work.

i'm deeply hurt by this unprovoked and unwarranted attack.

Nice review guys and thanks for the laugh's.

Smoked another today and must say i like them even now but with age i must say this cigar will get only better.

We must get many many more to store away !

Thanks Rob. I really needed a laugh (... and nice shirt). It's great to get a clearer picture of this until I try one.

With so many variant reviews on the Bolivar Gold Medal release I thought I would take the opportunity to do a side by side review with Ken Gargett. This way we could focus on the cigars in the same environment and discuss the BGM progressively as we smoked it through.

Ken arrived at 11am as he had a lunch to attend first (we are his free carpark). Ken returned at 5pm in a happy and joyous mood

No doubt Ken will post the list of wines he enjoyed at the lunch. The wines are simply astounding.

Anyway...a pic of Ken settling down for the review:

And myself (Lisa gifted me the shirt....no comments).

image3550.jpg

From the outset, I told Ken that our plumbing was being repaired at Czar House and that No 1's were OK but No 2's were out of the question. For those that know Ken...know this is a challenge.

Kens response.

The Bolivar Gold Medals we selected were from the same box we had bith sampled and reviewed previously. The only difference was that I had dry boxed them for almost 36 hours.

Smell at cold was agreed to be pungeant toasted tobacco. No other discernible aroma. We both clipped the cap and Ken commented that his draw was a tad tight but acceptable. The draw on mine was similar.

We concurred that the initial draw at cold only delivered high quality tobacco on the palate.

We fired up the BGM's concurrently. Ken immediately commented on its tremendous strength as he had experienced previously. My thoughts were that it was medium full but not overly strong. I think we agreed that we have different perceptions of strength no doubt due to differing palates and tolerances.

Ken stated that he may have to go to the bathroom at some stage.

I said no.

We both agreed that the flavours discerned were pure, hedonistic Cuban tobacco. We are talking tobacco of the highest order. The burn is excellent, the ash firm.

image3552.jpg

Entering the second third we both commented on the underlying tannic nature of the cigar. This cigar is for the longterm. It has all the hallmarks of a classic old style Habanos. None of my previous observances of greeness or amonia were apparent. The cigar at this stage we both agreed had become more balanced. I rated the cigar Medium, Ken Medium Full. Aroma is strong, dank.

Ken raised the barest hint of Raisins showing through. I new what he was talking about but it was a outer hint at best. Agreed. There was no doubting that the flavour was still intense toasted tobacco and tannin.

Ken now states that he really has to go to the bathroom.

I said no.

image3553.jpg

The last third of the cigar was very much a mirror experience of the second. Just loads of pure tobacco pinned with tannin. we now have no doubt that in 5-10 years this cigar will become something very very special. I think we concurred that smoking these gems now is a waste but no-one should stop themselves from trying at least a few to experience what a young BGM should be.

no problem. i thought he'd keep the wine for himself but nice to know he passed it on. you deserve it!

In Summary.

1. In the BGM we have a cigar which we believe has all the hallmarks of a great. How long it takes to get there we don't know. At this point it is a medium/full bodied tannic toasted tobacco laden cigar which while enjoyable it is would be asinine to score. What we do have is a well into the 90's cigar in the future.

2. Make sure your bathroom is working when Ken arrives.
