Let me start off by saying that I LOVED this cigar. The flavor, balance, construction, etc… were all top notch. I'd say this cigar rates among one of the best I've smoked in years.

This is the 2nd or 3rd cigar I’ve smoked from this particular box, and they’ve all been excellent.

The setting: A hazy, hot and humid day on the deck...

The cigar: Hoyo de Monterrey Double Coronas (70s)

Paired with: Flavored water

MRN opines that this cigar “lacks longer term aging potential for developing real depth and elegance and 10 year old ones might taste rather bland” (See MRN, pg. 197). I don’t often find myself disagreeing with MRN (except on the Davidoff #1 and #2), but in this case, my conclusions run afoul of this statement.

This cigar sported a medium to light-medium brown wrapper, nicely formed cap and a minimal amount of veins. A very noticeable box press, and very little if any tooth. The cigar felt uniform in construction, with a slight give. No soft/hard spots were felt.

I clipped the top and was treated to a perfect draw. Just the right amount of resistance.

I toasted and lit the foot, and was immediately introduced to notes of toasted nuts, sugary bread, and a lemony sweetness. Something akin to a lemon square or a lemon muffin. A hint of spice, but only just a hint. The flavors were most pronounced when exhaling a little though the nose. The aroma from this cigar was just amazing. Because there was little to no breeze outside, the smoke lingered in the air, and the fragrance remained for quite some time after each puff. This cigar was as much a pleasure to smell as to taste.

The smoke volume was superb, if not a bit too heavy. Between the thickness of the smoke and the lack of a discernable breeze, I was able to lose myself in the sight of the smoke rising, twisting and spiraling above me. The ash was very flaky and unpredictable, and my shirt bears the scars.

I hated to finish this cigar, but the heat of the day forced me to retreat inside just prior to nubbing the cigar.

With only 12 or 13 of these left, I’ll have to carefully choose the occasion for the next one. This was a very special cigar, one that I’ll remember for quite some time.

I want a review on the doughnut :lol2:

Great pictatorial review Eric. My findings on HDM DC is that they need a hell of a lot of time to show their worth. Your review just confirms my personal thoughts.
