Nice review..... I am so frustrated with this cigar. I had some from '03 that were some of the best tasting cigars I've ever had. So I ended up purchasing a box from '01 that are absolutely horrendous. I've tried 2 so far and had to put the 2nd one out 1/2 through. I don't know if it was/is a storage problem on this particular box or just inconsitancy or what, they almost taste moldy. I'm now afraid to pull the trigger on another box of these.

I have really enjoyed the couple I've had from my 2006 box. Dark and delicious, room to improve for sure, but I'm happy I bought them. Kind of a dark and moodier Hoyo, woodier and more masculine.

The samples I've had from early '06 were plenty strong, with lots of rich, woody flavors. Reminded me of an Epi #1. The only thing missing was the sweetness, which I expect will develop with a few years. At their best, the Dieux have a honeyed aroma and flavor.

I thought long and hard on that flavour profile. I wrote it down....looked at it...then went back and tasted again and again and there is no question.....salty Anchovie :-)

Just call them as I see them

Hoyo De Monterrey Le Hoyo Du Dieux (MAR 06)

There has been a lot of comment on this cigar of late no less than by myself stating that 05/06 prodution has lost its way.

I love the Dieux because of the light bodied complexity it delivers. If anyone here has tried examples from 1996 - 2003 you will know what I am talking about. However since 2005 I have felt that Dieux has lost its way. Far too many one dinensional, underfilled unsatisfying cigars. It has been a real disappointment for me for although I know they are young, they have shown few redeeming features which point to development into the future.

This morning I delected a great looking March 2006 example. I have had other 2006 examples which have left me underwhelmed. This one however had an enticing sweet spice smell at cold. Very sweet. Construction was perfect.

Cerrated the cap to find an easy draw. Too easy for my liking but many would find it perfect. On the lips it was sweet cream a flavour which I associate with the HDM Dieux. Promising start.

Torched the foot, beautiful aroma of cloves and stewed prunes. Medium in body with white pepper through the nose. Distinctive flavour on the palate, all sweet rice pudding with a mocha overlay. Sprinkled Chocolate dust tecture to the flavour.

This cigar is evolving nicely. Definitive mocha continues on. White pepper through the nose disappears. Body now mild to medium.

Sweetness disappearing through the mid point. I am registering a flavour I have not tasted before in a cigar and am hesitant to post it. Yet, the flavour persists. A definite salty pungeant flavour. It is without a doubt in the world Anchovie. Before you recoil in disgust....it is actually bloody good. Hats off to a cigar which can go from Mocha to Anchovie and manage to pull it off. Mild now. soft, velvety mild cigar with real charachter.

This HDM Le Hoyo Du Diex has given renewed hope in the Marque and vitola. Mild in body but very complex. It has a soul and character which will see great development in the years to come. Is this just another example of early 2006 greatness before mid 2006 mediocrity? Not sure but I will search out some more mid 06 Le Hoyo's to try.

89/100 4/6 smokerings.
